Not what it seems
I realize you people are young, but I was able to beat it on like the 4th or 5th try. It is luck based, but each moment is about decisionmaking. 1) Collecting powerups 2) Depths of well 3) Colors needed to complete level 4) Any 2-chains or 1-chains already present 5) Satisfying maximum number of matches.
Decisionmaking is not finding the "right answer", but doing the best with what you are given. Considering the complexity of the game, there are a lot of imperfect decisions to be made under time pressure, and you need to be able to sort out which of the 5 or so factors is most important. (For example, if a well is filling up, you may disregard all other matches and only match the color for that well.)
There is definitely "skill" involved, but it's not about the right answer, but a vague holistic guess as to which is most important, and what one should look for. So this is a very well desigined game -- meant to be an information overload, but still defeatable. I'm sure he spent some time tweaking the distributions.
P.S. I still don't know how they got those obscene high schores.

Hey twitchy: It IS based on luck, that is a fact, not an opinion. but it is only BASED on luck, and like almost any card game, skill is what you do with the hand that is dealt to you. and even though this is based on luck it is still a great game, the only things i could say to make this a better game, is to lower the difficulty jumps (going from 3 colors and 3 slots to 4 colors and 4 slots? why not 3.3 to 3.4 to 4.4?) and have lives..... like 3 lives, so that even if you get terrible luck and don't quite understand the how to play the first time, you can still enjoy the game on your other lives.
oh and farthest i got was lvl 4, how many lvls are there?

It was a solid game, yes it can be a little boring, but your on NewGrounds, playing flash games. Not much to expect here. (Note: People who hate puzzle games are weak minded FPS gamers.)
This game does need a twist to it though. Design wise you hit it spot on for a good game.
Small modification required
All the game really needs is to have unlimited use of random cog generator and current cog remover.
It has very good music, which fits the mood of the game.
The graphics are also excellent.
Its just that the gameplay was too hindered.
