Old School Style, but with Old School Jokes

I have to admit, I too am one of Legendary Frog's mllions of fans, and I practically went nuts when I heard that there was going to be a Final Fantasy cartoon apart from the FF tribute. Even though I'm not a huge fan of FF, I've played all of the games and was hoping that this new cartoon would live up to the standard Legendary Frog had set with his other cartoons, and I was disappointed to say the least.

At first, the idea of having the 'old-timey filmstrip' look seems cute, and the Alfred Ashford-esque voice similar to that in "One Ring to Rule them All 2" was good for a quick laugh. However, I among many other viewers were met with the issue of the cartoon becoming more of a tutorial than a humor-based piece. A lot of the smaller details that may have been originally intended to be funny ended up seeming more like simple explanations and a chore to watch through. Thus, a lot of the humor was SOLELY from the sound of the narration. Even the actual RPG jokes in the cartoon are overused and predictable. "I have no idea why these random animals would be carrying 148 Gil and a magic Fire Ring." This of course brings up the issue that the extra shorts were funnier than the entire movie. If Legendary Frog had been focusing on combining those types of jokes rather than the narrative, I would have no problem with this.

A lot of people have been complaining about the assistance of Super Flash Bros. in the creation on this cartoon. I don't have any problems with this alone, as the animation and the style worked out well. However, I expected the humor to make up for this, which it failed to do, so it seems like lately Legendary Frog's been going for quantity of cartoons lately rather than quality.

I won't dwell for too long on the mini-game. Basically, it served its purpose as a time filler, and didn't take too long to master, but I doubt it could ever serve as a stand-alone game, as I wouldn't have played it had it not been for the bonus scenes, (which again were worth the effort.)

All in all, this was a fairly decent flash cartoon in general. The style was cute, and the animation was smooth, but it would have been perfect if there had been more humor not reliant on the narrative. Hopefully, Legendary Frog will be able to improve his humor and the general script before Resident Evil: Code Veronica flash edition is released. (I'm still looking forward to seeing more Alfred!)
