Good, but watch your shading

The good - good form, nicely done clothing, anatomy looks mostly correct

The bad - watch your shading. I'm thinking you use a tortillian or a blending paper stump, maybe even your finger or a paper towel. Never use your finger - the natural oils in our hands cause paper to yellow and become somewhat discolored. In some parts the smoother shading works, and in some parts it looks muddy. The name of the game is pencil control. Once you can do value without any tools other than pencils (provided you're drawing), then you've got your media control down pat. The right eye (from our viewpoint) does look awkward, but the rest of the face looks okay.

thanks for the advice it is somewhat helpful.

5 to 6 hours??? dude ur a machine!!

love the bold shading work you've done, good work there bud!

WOW !

WOW ! thats Really GOOD !!

rickygonza responds:

thank you very much! =]

Few minor points, but very realistic.

Proportion is a bit off (between eyes - face is too thin, back line, right shoulder, or lack of), although its tricky drawing from photos because they create an illusion of proportions that real life doesn't. Assuming you're using a photo. Also I'm really unsure as to what's going on with her chest?

I am, of course, being highly critical here, that's just how I review and I wouldn't review you if you weren't very good anyways. Hair is very difficult, looking rather limp here but it looks like that's just the model, the attention to detail there is great. You definitely have awesome shading skill with pencil, I do love the contrasts within the shading that give it a very definitive 3D effect, especially where you've gone really dark. Go even darker and bolder with your shading! I also think you could transfer those skills into watercolour really well.

thanks for reviewing Bryony. Drawing real stuff is some what difficult but what she is holding against her chest is a robe or cloth like thing. it was white in the picture which didnt really show any shading that i could do.i havent really tried water colors out to do portraits but thanks for the advice im Glad you like it and gave it an 8 =].

Very nicely drawn

Hoping for your sake you had a model for this :>

I think you did a real good job with the tools you had. Anatomy seems pretty much correct, and you did great on the shading with the different types of gray color.

Her face does look a bit weird, though. Eyes are off, and mouth looks a bit thick and compressed.

rickygonza responds:

i know what you mean but you have to actually see why her face looks thinned out
because she is slightly turn to the left To face the camera which would make her face appear as it is.
