Pretty good.
You know, I'm not an atheist, I'm sorta the second cousin of an atheist.
Basically I believe that there's a god, or something higher be it physical or abstract. But I think that the world is too messed up, and the words have re-tempered in the bible or other holy books so any shred of truths left have probably been lost in translations and greedy men's minds.
Basically I believe that we can't tell what's true anymore. So I won't be like hypocritical christians, or god-hating atheists (because though the large majority are actually caring christians, or calm and nice atheists both are overshadowed by the "loud minority").
So instead of adhering to some book, or some person. I just do what I feel is good and right, because I think if you listen to your true self you can always tell what's good or bad without someone standing over your shoulder. And I hope that when I die whatever waits will understand.
A real person doesn't obey a religion because they're scared of burning in hell, because they think some being is watching them, or even to please the "Creator". A real good person does what they think is good simply because they think it's good.
What's funny about this story in the bible isn't really what happened but how it's used today. It's usually used by Christians in 1 of 2 ways.
1: Don't make stupid pacts with God because you'll lose something.
What this means: Why the heck does she have to be sacrificed for his stupidity instead of God striking HIM down! This is supposed to have the subtle connotation that a woman does what a man decides quietly. And that she is something to be sacrificed. Also that children are expendable, a common theme in the bible for some reason. Job is stricken with leprosy, loses land, money, and all his kids because the devil dared/bet with god that Job would denounce God. God wins so he gives Job everything again twice. So now he has twice as many children as before... so it does not matter that it was different kids, only the number mattered not that they were people...
2: Men are worth more than women.
What this means: When Abraham goes to sacrifice his son. God intervenes and gives him an animal. So aparently substituting is ok for a male. When she is to be sacrificed, god not only does not intervene, but says that her only sadness is that she wont be married and grow old..... that she will miss what men can give her. This is used in some beliefs like Amish and such to again emphazise the need for a woman to sacrifice herself. It also shows how an animal is below a man, but not a woman because she herself is like a servant, or an "it" when the guy says "it" will be sacrificed.
Christians rebuttle: Things change and after Jesus came is when everything was good. Before was like a different time.
