Meet Lucia. You're probably wondering how she

okay, okay - you're probably not wondering that. She certainly is though; she tends to do it far too much. Today, she's had a funny idea: it includes, among other things, capturing a person in a pretty consensual, laidback, entirely safe manner to have a drawn out conversation about, like...God, the moral bankruptcy of 1900s psychological studies...anime maybe?

If that sounds trite on its face, well, perhaps it is. What ensues though is an event unheard of on the Last World, the world located most closely to the end of the universe and the last one we are ever likely to get in this lifetime. It is a leisurely trip through a maze with jagged edges. It becomes a commentary upon commentary as commentators gather to gawk and speculate about a series of events no one can really firmly understand.

And what the hey: you stick around after the end, we got romance, thrills, chills, and things it would be impolitic to talk about as a lead-in to an adventure through comforting environs with a witch and her agenda.

This VN was made for the Menhera VN Jam on itch.io, "menhera" referring to "mental healthers" or people who have to deal with their mental health throughout their day to day lives. It is usually a kind of aesthetic, almost fashionable, stylish, but it may be that my take on it is not particularly stylish or fashionable. I can say I did at least go for an aesthetic.

cw: sexual assault / rape (of monkeys), analogies about child torture, solitary confinement, animal abuse, prisons, clinical trials/animal experimentation, religious delusions/fixation/obsession. apologies for these and any missed triggers leading up to this game's release; it was not written with anything but the best of intentions by every subject covered herein.

Randomly clicked on this in the Under Judgment section just because I thought the thumbnail was interesting. I really enjoyed it! Not sure if Lucia is an author self-insert or not but as a character in the "game" she is very likeable. I found myself more fond of her than the player character seemed to be, LOL. I've never been a big fan of cryptic writing because I like understanding stuff and it makes me feel dumb but I think I was able to wrap my head most of the ideas at play, except for the "jumpscare room" shit and the whole lighthouse debacle (but I kinda dig lighthouses so I thought it was cool anyways). I just started "The Morning After" segment but I'm already a few hours into this and it's 5:30 in the morning so I might just edit this later after I go to sleep and finish it.

SMALL TECHNICAL ISSUE: It might've been intentional or just an issue on my end, but during the spear summoning scene PenPy couldn't load an image called shielding_CG or something like that. I would be very sad if I missed out on a cool CG. :(

DollhouseIRL responds:

Thank you so much for the review! I will admit candidly much of myself is in her but I wouldn't say she's completely a self-insert. The project began that way for me as something more autobiographical and that did fewer fantastical or weird things but, as the scope expanded, I think of her as someone dealing with similar things to me in ways I couldn't and wouldn't. I hope you enjoy the rest of it!

Huge whoops as to the image! I will correct that ASAP; thank you for giving me what amounts to a heads up. This was my first project, I think I see what I did wrong, and I am still clumsy and new with Python.

pretty good story!
