ABOUT

Magli Draelyn the Half-Dragon Mage (AKA Dragon Mage) is a singleplayer 2D platformer where you control a character who can switch between two contrasting movesets.

THE DRAGON MAGE HERSELF

Magli: A timid, knowledgeable mage who tends to keep her distance from other people. She hides her destructive dragon powers from others for fear of being rejected for who she truly is. Magli's controls are intuitive and familiar for platforming newcomers and veterans alike, and she moves at a steady, controllable pace. When Magli’s dragon powers are unleashed, she becomes…

Draelyn: A bolder, sassier side of Magli who lets her true colors burn brightly as a dragon! To clarify, her mage name is Magli while her dragon name is Draelyn (she has two first names because of this--don't think too hard about it...). Draelyn's controls can come off as complex and somewhat unorthodox to first-time players, and her speed tends to fluctuate between being either too sluggish or too fast to wrangle at first.

While it may be intimidating to learn the quirks of practically two different characters at once, the key to mastering Magli Draelyn's movement is to switch between her mage and dragon powers to fit the situation and to combine moves from each moveset for maximum speed--that's where her true potential shines, but she has yet to realize it...

...at least until one unfortunate, yet fateful, encounter.

THE STORY

Magli Draelyn's adventure begins when she and her boyfriend, Knigel, get kidnapped and imprisoned by dragon mobsters working for the Dragon Syndicate, a group of criminals stationed in the city of Drakageau who steal and horde magical spells and artifacts for their own malicious use! Lately, they've also been kidnapping people of various magical races and siphoning their magic. Magli and Knigel were unfortunate enough to get ambushed by some Dragoons working for the Dragon Syndicate during a nightly outing together, and to make matters worse, Knigel get reverted to a smaller size once he was found out to be a fairy and had his magic siphoned! Determined to keep her longtime friend safe and somehow return him to his normal state, Magli must now use her dragon powers to escape, but at the cost of being a much more valuable target for the Dragon Syndicate...

A NOTE FROM KAYSUN (NEWGROUNDS EDITION):

You may or may not have seen this game on my itch.io, but I've recently decided to upload it to Newgrounds just to see how it would perform on a different platform. For the uninitiated, this is a little pet project game I've been working on since October of 2022, and I'm mainly putting it out there to see what people think about it while also adding a few changes and new additions every few or more months. I'm always seeking ways to improve this game, so feel free to comment on what you liked, disliked, or any suggestions for future improvements.

Have fun!

okay this looks like a fun game with intersting mechanics, but on several orcasions I got stuck on map due to an unconventional and unintitive bottom combination required to progress.
at some point the annoyance of trying to figure that out overweight my curiosity for what came next.
Sorry Miss Dreaelyn but you are just not worth it

Very fun game! quite enojyable with the platforming, seeing how they platformed along with the super fun speed you could achieve was great! only problem were how some sections(Basically every part where you had to go mage and hit yourself with the star to break a block.) were a slog because if you don't hit a certain timing you're just stuck while mashing.

Still: super fun game, nice soundtrack, mobility was really fun and controls are pretty intuitive whilst still leaving some stuff open for you to find out for yourself.

Pretty good game. I like the mechanics and movement, but I don't like how complicated it is and I am personally not a fan of the theme tbh. Also, the game runs smoothly from 0-1 to 0-4, but on 1-1, my game was so laggy that I couldn't even play.
Also, I don't like how long the tutorial is. It should be a bit smaller.
Besides that, I think this game is still a 4.5 star.
The music is also banger, at least for level 1 mostly.

Huh, this is quite the interesting game you got here! For the most part, I really like the concept of switching between two forms which each have their own strengths and weaknesses, and while there's a lot to take in, I really liked how deep the mechanics got and enjoyed mastering the various movement techniques to pull off some cool tricks! Game is also very charming with its presentation: love how the personalities of the characters come off with their animations and stances, and the dialogue could be rather amusing.

That being said, while there was a lot to like here, there was also a lot to nitpick, so here we go:

*I felt like the characters are a bit too strong on their own and could use some tweaking to their capabilities so as to make them more synergetic and make-up for each others weaknesses. For example, I found it very odd that the timid and weak wizard form is able to do something as physically strenuous as wallkicks: I think that ability should be eliminated so that wallclimbing is left up to the dragon form where it makes more sense due to their strength and claws. I know you'd need to tweak the existing level design and such to make up for this, but I think it'd be worth it and highlight the character swapping much more.

*Game definitely overdoes it with the tutorial handholding, I feel. So much text to explain things that could be explained with simple pictures, can be put off till later, or the player can naturally infer. I understand that you want to teach the player all of the little subtleties of this wonderful system you've built, but seeing so many words just makes me want to skip them, and I as a player would like to figure some of them out myself, almost like a puzzle, so as to feel clever.

*I felt a bit let down by the final level: we'd been spending so much time learning all this movement tech that I thought the game was building up to be like Dustforce or Celeste, delivering some challenging parkour/speedrun-esque precision platforming levels, but instead we just get what felt like very generic combat with levels that don't need any of the techniques we just learned.

*Speaking of the final level, it was also weird that it suddenly introduced this new emotion meter where if you get too scared or too brazen, you can't transform back to the other until you calm down. I like the idea in theory (one of my favorite games is Pac-Man 2 on SNES which uses this same system), but in application, it just kind of felt like an unnecessary annoyance, and you even seem to think so because you had to introduce items that can force an emotion reset just to avoid players getting stuck in one form with no way out. Think you might be overloading the game with so many systems instead of having a clear focus.

*There were also some minor issues like how the LT button wasn't being recognized from my controller: perhaps its because I use a PS4 controller? Luckily the LT button wasn't that necessary, as it was only used for these weird and superfluous techniques.

Despite my gripes and grumbles, I really like the idea behind this game and want to see more progress on it!

Possibly the most complicated platformer ever
