Surprise! Whoopie's Playtime for ME-OS is fully playable on Newgrounds! This game was heavily inspired by the janky platformers I played as a kid on flash sites, including this very website, so I felt it would be most appropriate to upload here. The objective is to get through all thirty levels without losing all your lives! You can't kill any of the enemies or obstacles, and you can only dodge... if that sounds annoying already, make sure to try the "unfair" mode in the options!

Controls:

  • WASD/Arrows to move left and right
  • Space to jump
  • Enter to pause

Cast (in order of appearance):

Whoopie, Palaka, Triusotchnik, Haleaf, Kamotork, Dereham

Extra info:

This game was originally released as part of ME-OS's Zelomedia Splash collection. ME-OS is my operating system simulation game with tons of games, programs, and OS like features on it. Zelomedia Splash is one of the programs in the OS that has even more small games inspired by many flash games I played years and years ago.

When I was maybe around six or seven years old, I started discovering a ton of flash games to play. By todays standards, a lot of those games were janky or straight up unfair, but I had so much fun playing them anyways! A few of those games felt very similar... in fact, too similar. It didn't come to me at the time, but I found out over a decade later when revisiting them that they use the same engine. UI is in the same places, the enemy movements are the same, the respawns are all dumb and vulnerable, the still level frames, all of that was consistent. I knew I wanted to make a spoof game of these types of games one day.

So a few months ago, Whoopie's Playtime was the result. It was painful to make a game purposely jank, but that's what kept it close and nostalgic for me! However I felt like certain things would make people a bit too upset, especially if they are unaware of the context, so I added an "unfair" option. Basically it changes the way some enemies move, closer to my inspiration source material, which also would include a ton of unpredictable randomization. Stuff like timing randomness, speed randomness, and even random jittery movement. Just take a look at what happens to Haleaf (the leafy looking enemy) when unfair is turned on!

I was thinking about releasing this on Newgrounds for a while, because all of ME-OS takes a very long time to make and I eventually want to sell it... but it felt right to release it here. Newgrounds spawned half of the games that inspired me to make this one after all, and without it, I probably never would have had the idea. Plus I'd be really pumped if someone can recognize the games this one was inspired by, so if you do please let me know in the comments!

If you would like to learn more about the game, please feel free to visit the website, or hop into our Discord server where I constantly share what's being worked on, what's coming next, contests/events, and even a little bit of secrets. Thanks for reading all this stuff!

P.S. If you notice any audio issues, I apologize; the files are fine, the code is fine, but Unity refuses to work with Webgl export audio on this specific song no matter what. Oh well :(

EDIT: The medals in this game are now working correctly! I sincerely apologize if anyone beat the game and hasn't received a medal, if you're one of those people, let me know!

Cute and challenging, but needs more opportunities to add lives.

octopus58 responds:

Thank you! I understand the want for more lives, I can consider adding a few more... just don't want to stray too far away from the more "cruel" inspiration material if that makes sense

pretty cool game!
