Familiars is a compact monster-catching fest in an online multiplayer world. It also has some optional hard stuff for people who like a challenge.

  • 1 battle = 1 levelup, and the max level is 15. I don't want to waste your time with rpg grinding
  • with only 20 Familiars in the game, you can max-out and understand all the familiars in the game within a few hours
  • ... and then you're ready for the hard stuff
  • find hidden portals to other dimensions, where you must manage your familiars' HP and your potion supply in a slew of battles against fairly smart CPU opponents
  • or, if you want, fight other players you meet in the world to test your mettle
  • also the only way to communicate with other players is by pressing the "howdy" button repeatedly, or running around in circles

It's like Pokemon but before you learned all the movesets and types and what everything does and then the game stopped being about discovering new things. Here you can discover new things for hours. 5/5

Treasure Hunt review!

### Aesthetics: 7 / 10

You did a good job with the old-school look, but it feels a bit empty.

### Originality: 4 / 10

It's a Pokemon clone. The tiny MMO aspect seems like a cool idea but there weren't any other players when I played.

### Challenge: 5 / 10

There are plenty of hard battles and it takes some navigation skill to find everything, but this suffers from the usual JRPG problem of battles just presenting the illusion of strategy. Victory is based on your level rather than your skill, and leveling just takes time.

### Fun factor: 5 / 10

The clunky interface makes everything feel like work. You provided a lot of alternative keys for opening the menu but no keys for going straight to specific items in the menu. And to look at the map I need to navigate to it as an item inside my inventory every single time. And I need to drop off each individual monster at the resort while making sure to close the menu and open it again between each one because I need to move to a different spot. It's nice to explore the world, but I wish the environment was more interactive.

### Content: 10 / 10

An impressive amount of monsters with many types and moves, and the world is big by browser game standards even if it is compact by MMO standards.

### Total: 31 / 50

(The Treasure Hunt review score is different from the standard Newgrounds review score because it uses different criteria.)

It is honestly a very neat monster battler, especially with the 1-bit aesthetic, but this honestly really needs some audio, it is deafeningly quiet. I do want to give props for resolving the zubat problem that caves have, absolutely HATED burning through repels to get through those in EVERY generation.

Other than that, some additional changes I'd want added are:
- A way to recover HP passively
Potions are rare, and some enemies hit extremely hard. HOWEVER, I want to deviate from Pokemon and request that it cannot be easily abused. For example, make it take 30 mins irl to fully heal a familiar in the resort may be a good way to balance it.
- Automatically send caught monsters to the resort if the party is full
- Let us pet our familiars!
- Add a settings pane to the menu

This is actually pretty good, especially the animations for sprites and the personality of monsters wasting turns to just goof around (reminds me of undertale kinda) but I have some suggestions. There needs to be both a shop to buy items and a way to more reliably heal your familiars cuz potions are surprisingly rare and monsters tend to hit kinda hard. Also make it so that capturing excess familiars automatically sends them to the Resort so we don't have to take extra time to run from battle, go to the resort, drop off a familiar, then go back and attempt to capture the familiar until it works. Those are just a few suggestions :)

there is no way to rest familiars, this is actually a really bad mechanic...
make it so they slowly regain life on the resort so it avoids abuse, but gives a fair recover
