v2.8 RELEASE NOTES: https://eventlesstew.newgrounds.com/news/post/1464505

(Plus v2.7.3 and v2.7.4)

Yep, I've packaged my feature-heavy and accurate Scratch remake of Pac-Man using Turbowarp and posted it onto Newgrounds lol.

Please note that some parts of the game may not be polished well. If there are any bugs, feel free to comment about it.

Pac-Man Scratched is a remake of Pac-Man that I made on Scratch (No kidding) that is now here thanks to the Turbowarp Packager. The content in the game includes, but is not limited to:

  • A very accurate remake of the arcade classics.
  • Maze editor to let your creativity run wild!
  • Option presets to make it easier to play Ms. Pac-Man and Jr. Pac-Man and Arcadified Atari Pac-Man and Pac-Mania
  • Several different mazes to choose from.
  • Junior Jumble (Jr. Pac-Man mazes) makes use of the extra screen space to show the entire maze on the screen.
  • Arcadified variations of the Atari 2600 maze and the Pac-Mania mazes (Mania Mashup) are present.
  • The Randomiser gives you a random maze with random colors. There may be a chance that you'll find a secret in all the randomness.
  • Gamemodes change the way you play Pac-Man. Eat all of the dots in the maze like normal, make Pac-Man faster, (Speed up) chase down Miru and get the fruit she is holding, (Fruit Chase) face one ghost instead of four, (Punky's Revenge) or randomise everything! (Random Chaos)
  • Game Styles can change the gameplay to match the gameplay for the original game, Ms./Jr Pac-Man, Atari Pac-Man and Pac-Mania.
  • Multiple playable characters, they don't have any gameplay changes though.
  • You can jump or speed up at the push of a button. (Ability)
  • Play some tunes from Namco Classics. (Music) You can even let the maze decide for you. (Music - Auto)
  • You can slow down or speed up the game using Game Speed.
  • Confuse Clyde with Blinky. (Or you can swap Clyde with Sue or Tim if you want, done through Clyde Swap.)

With all of these features letting you play Pac-Man your way, I hope you enjoy!

in fullscreen mode sometimes the character speeds are inconsistent which leads to weird bugs but other than that it's perfect

Eventlesstew responds:

That’s just glide blocks being glide blocks lol, fullscreen just makes it more noticeable. (Will be fixed in v2.9)

This game is very good but for someone reason the sprites for all the pacmen and the ghosts are blurry and I don’t know why that is. And also the collision detection for eating the ghosts when you get a power pelllet is broken I gotta be like 4 feet away from one of them and the game will register it as the ghost being eaten so that also needs to be fixed

Eventlesstew responds:

Ye i'll see what's up with the sprites. The game is currently undergoing a major code overhaul and the collision is already much better than before, so hopefully that issue will be fixed next update.

Really great game, I’m loving it so far! The amount of customization and many game modes you are able to do here makes this extremely replayable.
I have to commend the amount of effort and creativity on this project! It feels like a classic Pac-Man collection with it not just being the original Pac-Man, but Ms. Pac-Man, Jr. Pac-Man, Plus, 2600, and I’m really impressed with how you implemented Pac-Mania in here! It’s very fun seeing experimenting with some of the modes in this format, wondering how Pac-Mania would play on Jr’s board and vice versa.
The game as a whole is extremely faithful to all the original games, I’ve noticed the Scatter mode is around the same in each game, the AI for each ghost behaves the same way, I even noticed stuff like the areas that the ghosts can’t bypass in the original Pac-Man maze or how pissass easy 2600 Pac-Man is compared to the others because everything is so slow in that game lol. Something I really appreciated is the Blinky’s aggressiveness option, which I knew he could be extra aggressive, but I didn’t know until very recently that he changes his expression in Pac-Mania. Love how you added that in there. Great attention to detail here!

I do have some problems with the bugs the game tends to have sometimes, which I understand it’s not the most well polished game out there and hopefully you can iron those out in the next update. Sometimes I faze through the ghost when I’m trying to eat them, or the hitboxes don’t line up too well, so I’d end up dying a little before or after the ghost supposedly collides with me, which can get pretty annoying. The most annoying bug I get from time to time though is that I would randomly die somewhere in the maze when I’m nowhere near a ghost at all. This usually happens sometime after I died a previous time between starting my next life, and the next ten seconds. That can kind of ruin the run for me sometimes as it would feel cheap and janky for me. I’m not sure how aware you are about these bugs, but I hope you can fix them in the future.
This is more insignificant, but I also feel like the difficulty is notably a lot harder in this game than it is in the original games. I think that has to do with the speed of the ghosts being overall faster than in the original, where all of them go faster than you as early as level 2 in this game while in the original, (except for Blinky) all of them are very slightly slower than you. I don’t really have an issue with it, just noticed it is all.

The two new game modes are great, I had a really fun time with it! Implementing Meru in Fruit Chase here is very creative, it forces you to change your strategy on the fly if she’s being uncooperative with you. Punky’s Revenge is also great too, great concept of having one extremely powerful ghost chase after you. Only problem I have with the mode is it feels too easy to manipulate Punky at times and have him stun himself, bump into walls, and create distance between each other. I feel like the game mode could benefit more if he was a little harder, either by buffing his speed or stun time, or giving him a new move that stumps Pac-Man. Either way though, it’s a really fun and unique way to play these games!

Here’s some suggestions/extra stuff to add if ya want to:
- Add another option that changes the Power Pellets to Super Pellets from Super Pac-Man, or those powerups from Pac & Pal.
- Include the running back home music from Pac-Land when facing Punky.
- Splitting the speed option into two: one for Pac-Man, and one for the ghosts.
- An option to allow more than 4 ghosts in other modes outside of Pac-Mania.
- More abilities. Don’t know what though tbh, can’t really think of others besides the two you already have.

You don’t have to add those, just stuff if you want to have. But yeah, very well done! Had a blast playing through it!

Eventlesstew responds:

Thanks for the massive comment lmao, I shall address all the feedback here, starting with the bugs:

- Sometimes I faze through the ghost when I’m trying to eat them, or the hitboxes don’t line up too well, so I’d end up dying a little before or after the ghost supposedly collides with me, which can get pretty annoying.
Currently reworking how collisions work which should hopefully make the phase-through bug not happen as often as it currently does. (I'd like to keep some form of the glitch since it was also in the original Pac-Man, but it happens way too often here and that's what I wanna fix)

- The most annoying bug I get from time to time though is that I would randomly die somewhere in the maze when I’m nowhere near a ghost at all. This usually happens sometime after I died a previous time between starting my next life, and the next ten seconds.
How the fuck does that happen? Any chance you (or anyone else) could reproduce the bug and send over methods on how to trigger it?

- I also feel like the difficulty is notably a lot harder in this game than it is in the original games. I think that has to do with the speed of the ghosts being overall faster than in the original
How speed is currently managed is done through a very janky system that I've used since v1.0. (Where the only new stuff was Clyde Swap and Fruit Chase) I'm currently reworking many aspects of the game to use a system that should hopefully make things more accurate to the originals.

- Only problem I have with Punky's Revenge is it feels too easy to manipulate Punky at times and have him stun himself, bump into walls, and create distance between each other.
Punky will definitely be getting a massive buff next update, starting with making the dash and jump abilities more similar to Blinky and Pinky's special abilities from Pac-Man Arrangement. (In that game, there's a ghost named Kinzo that can merge with one of the ghosts to give them a new ability) I might also add a new ability based on Inky's ability from the same game too for one of the pre-existing game styles.

Now for the suggestions!

- Add another option that changes the Power Pellets to Super Pellets from Super Pac-Man, or those powerups from Pac & Pal.
While I would love to include SOME kind of Super Pac-Man content, it would be too much of a hassle (and be filesize intensive) to make super and squished forms of all of the playable characters and ghosts. :(

- Include the running back home music from Pac-Land when facing Punky.
Good idea, should be easy to implement!

- Splitting the speed option into two: one for Pac-Man, and one for the ghosts.
Game speed is basically how fast the entire game goes lol, not just Pac-Man and Ghosts. But I can include separate options that change the speed of the player and ghosts.

- An option to allow more than 4 ghosts in other modes outside of Pac-Mania.
Might consider this option for 0-5 ghosts so you can either play with no ghosts (Exception being Mania which still has the Commons) or the Ghost Gang + Sue.

- More abilities. Don’t know what though tbh, can’t really think of others besides the two you already have.
TBH I'm thinking of adding the Bombs from Pac-Man CE DX, but rn I haven't figured out how to implement them lol. (For the bombs from CE2, I can do the same thing but reskin the bombs into rockets or smth)

But yeah, I'm really glad you enjoyed playing through the entire game! I've also laid some easter eggs here and there if you're interested in hunting those down.

Fun fact: Pac-man and his son jr. pac-man have the most painful death animations
Pac-man's entire body just rips itself apart
Jr. pac-man EXPLODES
While Ms. pac-man just spins around like "oh no ive fallen and i can't get up :("
Good game tho

Eventlesstew responds:

lol

bro, how do people not like this, it's awesome!

Eventlesstew responds:

I think a lot of issues in the game are about the gameplay, which I've made pretty big fixes for in recent updates. (Especially in v2.8)
