Yu Dragoon 2: A flash Game

Author Comments

Hi, folks!

Here's my entry to FlashForward2023, unfortunately it's not finished! Perhaps trying to make a PlayStation 1 game in flash for a game jam might have been a tad too ambitions. Well anyway, I've decide to upload it now and maybe upload an updated version later, maybe as an enhanced mode, like Yu Dragoon 1, or as a separate thing. We'll see. follow me on twitter for updates.

At any rate, I hope you enjoy you like what I made, cya!

Note, there will be bugs and audio might go out of sync on certain browsers/on low end computers.

Note 2, This game uses the arrow keys and the X key, or a GamePad and the X button.

The smoothness of the 3D here really can't be understated, it really is completely seamless. While normally a pretty simple thing, the diagonal running animations also are a really important touch that contributes to the fully 3D feel of the game. This seriously looks awesome. If your engine can handle it, I would like to see some kind of platforming or verticality so that the third dimension can actually do something other than be a cool graphical illusion.

Gameplay-wise, there's a lot missing. As others have said, the camera is too zoomed in to have much spatial awareness, and it's also really hard to make out if you can hit an enemy from front or behind (it just makes more sense to run around and attack from the side.) The single attack, lack of dodging, blocking, combos, etc. make this feel almost like Sword of Vermilion in terms of blandness, and as an unfinished game there's obviously nothing in the way of upgrades or progression yet.

Honestly the only thing this game needed in order to succeed was a teammate to take care of some of the boilerplate code needed for a combat and inventory system.

TeamTamago responds:

Thanks, all this feedback is really helpful! I'm already working on a version with these things implemented. Also verticality is going to need some clever tricks and the like but it's totally possible.

Seems like it got a lot of potential. Hope to see more down the line

amazing, I wrote my thoughts as I went
- I like the pixel portraits, how they are slightly 'over colored' , its actually a pleasing look
- Mode 7?????
- how does bunny know the directions? or do they have a compass
- I like how the dialogue slightly changes depending on what order things are done in
- I can't believe this isn't 2D, wow
- the mc kinda looks out of place with the enemies (who have that cool '3d model rendered and turned into sprites look, like sonic cd intro) but still, actually still somehow fits in
- I like how crisp all the pixels look
- did you use any tools to make this game, or did you code it all yourself?

TeamTamago responds:

Thanks for the feedback!
As to what tools I use, I coded it all in Flash CS3, except for a little bit I needed to use Gamemaker for. Specifically I needed to write a program that would generate the pre-calculated data for the 3D perspective. Artwork was made in Flash, Blender, Photoshop and the like. Music was Cubase and an old piece of music software called ComputerMuzys which I got free in a magazine exactly 100 years ago.

This is an amazing demo, full stop.
3D in flash, check. Beautiful art, check. Decent tunes, check.
Fun to play, and a return to the world from before.
My biggest complaints are probably lack of healing options and pretty samey gameplay, and the side sprites of the character seem a bit off. and I did see that the story so far was rushed, but even still the first game was much wittier. I do hope the game gets a 'Yu Dragoon 1 Enhanced' treatment, because I love what I'm seeing here. (also I know the meme is that its a jam game, but I hope there's a lot more to play, I would like to see a couple areas? dungeons?)
Honestly 10/10 and probably one of the better ones of this jam.

TeamTamago responds:

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, there's a lot of stuff to improve or didn't get done due to the deadline, but I'm already working on ways to expand and improve it!

Got to the unfinished bridge. :) Just sitting there turning into a delicious stew hmm, if that's what you must do!

I look forward to playing this for real eventually. The engine definitely is pushing the boundaries for what you'd expect from a Flash game, though I've seen some pretty impressive things so far (like a 3D drift game) so I haveth already been surprised by such feats previous. :P

Feels like the movement's almost too swift, wonder if it'd feel more suitable with a slightly more zoomed-out screen, progresses very fast like this... difficult to time attacks well when you move this fast too. Otherwise the mechanics are great, and the graphics great, the motions great, the story seems entertaining thus far... hope you don't lose the spark required to finish this!

Keep up the great work!

Hi, thanks for the feedback! It's all very helpful! And yes, I'm totally going to finish it! :)
