Here is my entry for Krystman's pico8 shmup jam. Had a blast learning from his tutorials, and had some really helpful feedback from the community - big shout out to Aktane, Imbord3rlin3, DerrEmm, and Achie72 for the help, any issues with the game are down to my ineptitude and not purposefully ignoring any recommendations!

All art/music/programming by me.

Keyboard Controls (Gamepad works by default too):

Arrow Keys for directions

X = shoot (hold for autofire)

Z = bomb

Notes/scoring:

Collect the falling books to shoot a 'knowledge bomb' - also cancels enemy bullets that they touch. Each bullet cancelled also gives you score!

4 books for an extra life (note: resets book count to zero)

With a full life count, 4 books = 5000 point bonus (note: also resets book count to zero)

5 waves with a final boss.

dude, that's cool!

cool game! it looks nice, and is quite fun

Scowsh responds:

thanks for playing, glad you had some fun with it :>

The bullet patterns tend to overlap, so if there's a way to avoid half of these without using the spread shot it's beyond my ability. Other than that it's pretty fun

Scowsh responds:

yeah I guess the straight player shot is very limiting in terms of dealing with the enemies. I'd say the trickiest are the 'showers' - if you can pick them off real quick you should be good... otherwise it's tricky! Thanks for playing and the useful feedback, I'll be looking into having more of a spread shot for players in future shmups I make.

Can't play SHMPs for the life of me, but the art direction and sound design is quite nice, and very reminiscent of the "Neo-bit" style found in Indie games like Celeste and Shotgun King. That and the controls worked quite well (despite my poor inputs), never in the brief time I was playing did it feel like I was hampered by the controls.
9/10 I can't play SHMPS but it looks nice :)

Scowsh responds:

thanks for playing and the positive feedback, much appreciated!
