Who is Big Hoss, where exactly did he come from, and why is he the biggest thing on Newgrounds? We'll never know.

newgrounds users zerobombing a decent movie because of the author's shit opinions after claiming that the newgrounds community is chill and friendly
Edit: I don't think I need to, but whatever. There's my honest score.

Anonymous-Frog responds:

You contributing? Show your score.

I mean, visually the backgrounds are detailed and tweened correctly, and the characters' animations look okay (minus bulb barely moving its legs despite running), but the setup and payoff end up flat. There's no reaction from any of the two characters before Hoss rolls in, everything is immediate with no transition. Also, what is the joke? - The fat guy just kills and eats them, and that a goat scream plays?
You have the potential to make great things for sure! You just need to work on the comedic aspect of your videos, with better timing and payoff. One tip I could give: build up to something, only to trick the viewer into showing something else that is downright absurd.

Anonymous-Frog responds:

I agree, not the best joke in the world. First time animating in 60FPS with no time to come up with anything aside from “Indiana Jones boulder”. Plus I got canceled on Twitter which really fucked with my head near the end.

i agree with shal.

Anonymous-Frog responds:

[02:26]zekey: yeah i scrolled down and saw them
[02:26]zekey: the really long bad review has nothing to say
[02:26]zekey: its pure bloviation
[02:27]zekey: just someone writing 10 paragraphs with nothing to actually say
[02:27]zekey: like when a politician gives a speech
[02:27]!Anonymous! Frog: you mean the one by “shal”?
[02:27]zekey: people trying desperately to look smart by writing as much as possible
[02:27]zekey: i dunno it was REAL fuckin long
[02:27]zekey: i read pretty fast
[02:27]!Anonymous! Frog: same
[02:28]zekey: it almost seemed like the review was made in like
[02:28]zekey: an essay generator
[02:28]zekey: where you enter in a prompt and an AI writes a bunch of pseud-intellectual sounding nonsense based off the prompt

== doing a review the RIGHT way ==

Score: 2

Before I begin, I'd like to thank my critic peers like Brandy Buizel, Anonymous Frog, and xwaynecoltx for inspiring me. I feel like I can now take my reviews seriously and do things the RIGHT way.

I think that it's important to go over a few questions since I'm brand new to doing reviews the right way and considering this IS my first review, I should cover a few things first.

Right off the bat, I wonder if my unconscious bias determines my score no matter how self-aware I may think I am. Can this not apply to any critic? Are critics inherently biased because of this, regardless of their statements saying otherwise? If so, and if all art really is "subjective", then why am I being so critical? This is my first REAL critique after all. My first REAL review.

Well, even if I am biased, I'm putting in all of this work to break down someone's creative work. Subjective or not, the best part of art is being able to dissect it and making sure the Author knows MY opinion. And surely, with the reputation I'm going to soon build from making these types of reviews, my opinion can only become MORE valuable and necessary.

Yes, that's it! I will build a REPUTATION with my OPINION. People will want MY OPINION to be a POSITIVE one because of all of the reviews I make. Even with an unconscious bias, people must understand that though I don't know everything, nor have I claimed I know everything, I still have to have an opinion on the things that I like in a massive post. Its not enough that I've seen a submisson. It's not enough to encourage someone to just keep making art. I need to feed my ego too. Its also about me.

I have to make sure I'm looking at things from the lens of a robot. Yes, that's it! That's what it means to be a Newgrounds reviewer. Being completely dishonest with myself. Convincing myself and others that I'm a data-collecting robot that delivers only but the most precise reviews.

Mmm yes, I can't wait for my review to be read. I'm a genius. I'm so god damn smart. I'm going to make the most crafty and intelligent reviews and I'm going to do them on EVERY submission muahahaha. People will think I'm the most capable robot alive, I can dissect ANYTHING.

Perfect. With all of that out of the way, I can now leave my "pretend to be a robot while also convincing myself that there is no bias while also believing my subjective critique is flawless and important (feeding my ego)" review. Here we go.

It's shit.

It reminds me of something I'd see on a for kids youtube channel. No substance. No creative drive. Overall, it's very empty. And is it me or is the framerate way too much?

I don't know what andy and bulb have to do with Big Hoss or why even add them. If anything, it seems like a cartoon about them and not Big Hoss.

The genre is set to comedy, however, I don't see where the joke is. If the punchline is just Andy and Bulb being flipped as meat on a grill, then that really sucks.
"Hahaha, Big Hoss is fat so he's going to roll and then eats a lot"
That being said, the "humor" and "writing" is dated and I think it's something a boomer would have laughed at 20 years ago.

The music sounds like it was done in garage band and it was honestly just annoying. Seems like you referenced something you found online or you just found copyright-free music online. Idk.

I can't stand that stupid goat scream that's used in a bunch of for kids youtube cartoons. It's not really creative or funny anymore. I think I would have rated this at least 2.5 if not for that.

The best thing you have going for this cartoon is Big Hoss existing in it and rolling. I appreciate the effort in taking the "rumble tumble" part so literally, but also it feels like you didn't mean to be creative or funny with that, it really seems like you just heard the title of the collab and went with it.

You're not a very good animator. I think animation and comedy are what are going to be most important in my new official reviews. I think Animation not being good plays a big part in why I scored you so low here. Bulb running away looks ridiculously lazy. You got tired of animating the run cycles you referenced online, so you instead went with a bunch of repeating smear frames. Andy sticking his tongue out while running was just a weird choice. You had the opportunity to really exaggerate the characters and emphasize the fact that they're running, but you didn't you just played it safe which ultimately backfires hard.

It didn't really make sense the way that the characters got splat but then also stuck to big hoss but we didn't see them on big hoss until they just appeared out of nowhere, only to stay on big hoss rather than jumping off or falling off? Only to just be splat again after going off the ramp. The dirt ramp was drawn okay. The perspective though you used to make the buildings is not right. I have absolutely no clue how you are you going to leave "professional" and critical reviews on Newgrounds and not know how perspective works but
anyways,

I hope this is what you were looking for!

Can't wait to keep doing these. You and Brandy were right, this does feel great and my ego feels a whole lot better.

Animation: 1 | Sound: 1 | Variety: 2 | Comedy: 0 | Big Hoss: 10

Anonymous-Frog responds:

Thanks for the review, but a 2 out of 10 seems a little harsh and overexaggerated.

I don't review submissions this way to boost my own ego. I do it to inform users who clicked on the submission what to expect before they consume it, which a simple one sentence or one word "review" may not be able to achieve.

Animation and comedy (or just how well it entertains in general) are the two most important factors I cover, with animation, the hardest and longest process, being heavily prioritized.
I am in no way the best animator on this site and I'm always trying to improve all of my skills. In fact, I made a couple of other errors you didn't even mention, such as with the spatula.

If you think the "humor" feels dated 20 years ago, I don't blame you. It's not the quick fix zoomer humor you were expecting from this jam, which I’m personally not a big fan of, for various reasons. For all the wacky shit you've seen, you drawing the line at "goat scream" and knocking over half the score down is a little hypocritical.

I'm also never fully satisfied with the music, which I composed myself. I wanted something similar to an upbeat country theme, or the Slider theme from Super Mario 64, but could never quite get there.

goat scream forced meme
edit: frog is too lazy to lookup "scream sfx" on google

Anonymous-Frog responds:

I just needed A scream sound effect
