Instructions (Detailed version):

Move with WASD and aim with mouse.

Left click to shoot enemies.

As you play your healthbar will fill with pollution.

This healthbar is shared between you and your pond.

Actions that cause your healthbar to fill with pollution include:

Passively filling itself, shooting, taking damage, and allowing enemies to reach the centre.

The more pollution you have the weaker you will be (i.e. less movement speed and damage).

If your healthbar fills entirely with pollution you will lose the game.

Press space while at the pond in the centre to cleanse yourself, this will remove all of your pollution in exchange for a permanent debuff.
