Collect Circles and Dodge Spikes in this Circular Rhythm Game!

Cyclic was a game I made way back in high school around 4 years ago (2016-2018) and just recently came back to in order to add some finishing touches. You spin around a circle avoiding triangles and collecting balls, synchronized to the music. Taking inspiration from games such as Super Hexagon, Soundodger+, and Geometry Dash, Cyclic was an exercise to see whether I could make a game that was not only fun to make but also fun to play. Despite the awful user interface, questionable coding practices, and a poorly designed difficulty curve, I enjoyed my time with Cyclic and I hope other people can enjoy it as well.

Notes

To decrease lag, you can check the options "Limit Gameplay Effects" and "Limit Level Effects" in the options menu. The downloadable version also has significantly better performance. You can also enable fullscreen in the options menu, just check the box and click somewhere on the screen. If you don't want to play with Newgrounds integration (removing those pesky popups at the beginning of every level), you can turn Newgrounds integration off in the options menu. Mobile controls don't work in Safari, use Chrome or Firefox!

A very difficult game! I don't think I can get all the medals in it, because to get all the medals you need to study each level very carefully.

OMIGAWD THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE PADDLE IS SO SENSITIVE I TIPPETY TAP AND IT JUST OVERSHOOT.
a

I finally got all medals. I think I will stop there. Hardest one by far was to complete 15 nightcore levels!

The game is quite good and well polished. It is not for everyone as the difficulty is way over what most people are willing to challenge, but I would still recommend this game. It is underrated (only 3000 views?) and imo worth the time if you have some hours to spare, even tho it is very similar to other games in a generic way.

When I first played this game it seemed fun, but I soon drew the conclusion that it was too hard for me and left just to come back for the grindy medals (such as "Travel 10000 radians"), but for every medal I got, I realized I was just a tad bit away from another one. This let me set aims that were not too far away and at the end accomplish something that would be out of reach otherwise.

The stages are very interesting and fit well to the song that plays in them. It does alot to the game and I appreciate the in-game statistics.

Some elements were still too hard. The movement of the paddle for example. I have to time the release of a key perfectly because I cannot tap fast enough to align the paddle to a ball that I would barely miss in the nightcore levels. Things like that made the experience worse, but I guess I will rate it highly due to the many hours I have enjoyed spending on this game. We play games for fun, after all.

Some more stage-related details:

The stages start off with the easiest in top left, and get harder in either direction. I think it was a nice touch to make one section per author of the songs. I like the unique traits for each set of stages that give them some character.

I think the difficulties are very well evaluated but Birds (more like hard) and Aumetra the Witch (more like expert) should be switched.

Birds is a very slow stage. It is only hard because the field is partly hidden. The visual for collecting balls makes it easier. The hexagon in Birds is probably the hardest obstacle in the game and I only managed to take it once in practice mode.

Aumetra the Witch is mostly just hard because it is very long, but it also is the only stage where you cannot teleport to the other side. The stage is a bit special and it takes a while to learn.

I never fully learned how the spikes affect the total percentage of a stage. The balls seem to be the total collected but I seem to lose more percentage for hitting spikes than I get for avoiding them. This made Gravitation pretty hard to complete but once I did it I got 100% and the hexagon on the same try :)

The nightmare difficulty stages are much harder than any other. Since there are three of them and I need to complete 15 stages on nightcore (there are 17 stages in total), I need to not only do the feat to complete them on normal but also to complete at least one of them at a much faster speed! I ended up choosing Purgatori where I could rely on dumb luck.

Taut Strings and Computer Blues both have one section I still do not know how to do, but I did well enough on other parts to bring it up to 90% anyway (normal).

Computer Blues is the hardest stage. I tried to learn the part with the teleporters in practice mode but it goes too fast for me to see what is going on. This is why there should be a feature to slow down in practice mode.

Marble in nightcore was the stage I spent longest on, but I finally got 90% with the last burst of balls :D You need fast reaction time because the balls travel so fast.

ALSO, For anyone wondering about how to collect the hexagons and heptagons: There are one for each stage. Hexagon for normal and heptagon for nightcore. You have a + after the percentage when you have it collected. You need to play the rest of the stage perfectly from when you collect it. How you perform before does not matter, but I have noticed that I do not keep the + if I do very poorly. I have however noticed that you sometimes can do a mistake and still keep the +. I think I have also got 100% although I once did a single mistake, so I think you only lose the + if you lose a percentage and that the percentage is rounded up (i.e. if you get 99.5% it shows as 100%).

The music in this game is really good - Marbl is my favorite

Awesome! I played Taut Strings after trying the first level and got a score of 61%, and hey, at least it's not quite failing.

I don't really have much to say about the game, other than that it's really well made. Three inputs add up to a whole lot of complexity.

a cool unique rythm game
