This is a game I originally made for the third Dream Diary jam to celebrate Yume Nikki's anniversary back in 2019. It's since been updated for every yearly jam with 2021 being planned as the final update. Due to other issues, this final update didn't come in time for the jam, but an update still came. I then spent a couple weeks to add the things I wanted and finally have the game to a point where I want to share it on Newgrounds. (There were going to be medals as well, but it turns out that that's one thing that RPG Maker wouldn't let me break its legs over)
NOTE: The Newgrounds version of this game lacks some visual effects only available in the downloadable version. This is due to RPG Maker limitations, but nothing gameplay-wise is different.
I Cannot Drown is an exploratory horror game based on Yume Nikki and its many fan-games. There are currently three endings that can be unlocked as of this version as well as plenty of secrets to discover in the world Ume has found herself in.
I hope you all enjoy this project. I know that I am happy just for any of you to give this a try in the first place. If enough people are into this project, I may update it past this version in the future. :)
8/28/21 Version 1.0.1 Update
-Fixed a bug that lets you unlock an ending way too early.
I played this game with my friends on a voice call. All I'll say is it's pretty interesting! I enjoyed it.
My one issue is how finding Fu basically solves all of the answers in the game. It's kind of hard to find them, but once you do there's not really any remaining mystery or tension as to what kind of person Ume was.
That's all I can say, though.
As a yume nikki fan for a very long time, I only played a very small amount of fangames as there hasn't been many that has stuck out to me and peaked my interest. This is one of the very first fangames I have ever played blind and actually enjoyed, It's nice to find a more recent yume nikki fan game that is actually scary for once as years of horror media can get very repetitive. My only complaints is that not alot of the npcs respond to many of the effects, in fact unlike most games you can't even kill most of the npcs with the weapon effect, and I wished the speed effect(s) represented the protagonist's original design more. The second one is not a deal breaker as it's personal preference of mine, I'd say this is one of the better recent yume nikki fangames despite this, if not one of the best.
I love the vibe of the game its a good game
