Day 2: Treads

Day 2 of my daily uploads, I put tank treads on the cube this time, wow


This time I went for a slightly more serious tone, and a bit more detail on the models and animation.


I also gave up on the MATHEMATICALLY PERFECT MEASUREMENTS and just eyeballed it, much easier to actually get it done.


No particularly fancy techniques here, turns out I just need to add a "curve modifier" and move the single segment back and forth at the right speed to loop well enough.

Some reflections on yesterday's upload:

  • I should've paid more attention to the composition in terms of what was actually the area of interest: the wheels.
  • I think something went wrong with the resolution; either the Vegas project settings or the render settings, maybe I used a test render by accident... This one looks much clearer though.
  • I just slapped on DoF without giving it much thought, I bet that's what was causing the flickering. It didn't add much so I just took it out this time around.
  • For the song, I think I was trying to cram too many musical and rhythmic ideas without really thinking about how they would mesh together. I'll just go with cut-down but more clean stuff going forward.
  • I think I kept the scope of the modeling too small; for just a few short minutes more effort, I got a much more interesting model for this week. There's something to be said about diminishing returns, but like the opposite, you know?
  • I should pay a bit more attention to how the encoding changes the contrast, it was a bit hard to look at compared to the output straight from Blender.

Damn, I really need to learn how to do working treads

Are you building Newgrounds tank? =O

would love to see more than one angle and seeing the animation at different speeds with the focus being the treads/wheels at minimum hope to see how they'll interact with other objects since as they are designed now, they have very little give in the treads tracks to really roll over things and react which may be a problem for ya in the future if you plan on animating something with them or implementing them in a bumpy game space. other than that looking pretty nice so far and the sound design of the more subtle side of engine rumbles is nice, keep it up !

Ah true, having give is the whole point of treads! I don't plan on doing anything more with this, but I will definitely take more time to consider the motivation behind designs in the future. Thanks!
