Historically Accurate Space Race

This game is made for the Historically Accurate Game Jam 3 with the theme 'Cold War' and it was made in about 6 days.

In this game, you can choose whether to play with a US or USSR rocket and race to different planets.

Well, it is not how it actually went in the Cold War, I interpreted it in my own way.

Controls:

  • A / D or Left / Right arrows: Move left and right
  • W or Up Arrow: Boost/Shoot

Ok... So.. I played this up on 1 vs cpu as both the us and russia, only going to the moon. I liked the idea and the styling of the game, but it definitely has some issues mostly associated with balance.

First, the CPU can instantly fire the next stage of it's rocket where the player rocket seems to have to wait a random amount of time. At first I thought this had to do with playing the russian side, but I experienced it as both countries.

Second, the AI rocket always seems to be faster than the player rocket. If I get 5 boosts and don't hit anything and the AI gets 3 and doesn't hit anything I should win. Not the case, again experienced playing as both sides.

Third, the AI dodges every missile and seems to get every bonus (except when it is playing against itself.

Fourth, though not related to balance, it isn't obvious that the controls are different depending upon the country you choose, it should be clear that US rocket uses wad and soviet uses arrows.

Fifth, more of an accuracy gripe, there are no asteroids between the earth and the moon. Just saying..

I did like the music and the visuals, and I really liked the idea of the game.. It does need some tweaking though.

Thanks for the feedback, you covered some points that I didn't even notice because I was rushing to finish the game before the deadline of the jam, I really appreciate it :-)
