Fractal Collector

This is a experimental game with real time fractals.

Watch the making of:

Goal

Normal gameplay

Collect all the starbits to unlock the portal to the next level.

There is a Level randomiser included to have endless fun.

Fractal Creator

There is a creator level, so you can create your own fractal and explore it.

Controls

"Space" to move forwards

W,a,s,d or arrow keys to rotate.

Framerate improvements

If you are having frame rate issues, go to the pause menu and lover the rendering distance or turn of the shadows.

I'm getting a black screen when I try to play, it doesn't show a fractal.

JelleVermandere responds:

Try to play it in Chrome. Not all browsers work very good

This is an impressive technical achievement, and a good demo of what can be done with good math and clever code, but it’s not really a good game. The tricky controls are made worse when you get a level that lags to the point of being unplayable, which is an inherent flaw perhaps of generating something of potentially infinite complexity.

If you wanted to make a better pure game out of this, I’d recommend bringing the draw distance in a lot by default. A thick black fog and an infinite 3d maze of fractals would be creepy and atmospheric, especially with something chasing you. An option to reverse the pitch and yaw controls would also be good as they are typically the other way around for similar 3d flying games.

Also, the video in the description auto played for me, and I though the voice was part of the game (with the videos sound effects and the games music messing things up). Not your fault but it left an odd first impression.

JelleVermandere responds:

Hey, Thanks for the tips, It might not be that clear, but in the upper right corner there is a pause button where you can scale the rendering distance and inverse the controls. I do follow you on the fact that the game is not that good. I always enjoy the proces of creating frameworks and worlds more than creating the gameplay. Something to work on in the future.

I really like fractals and a game where you fly trough them seems like a great idea but my laptop that was top notch i7 with best specs four years ago and should be at least decent now plays this at unplayable crawling speed. First time I see it not handling a browser game.

Was really fun! Slow to play though; but liked to explore and move around the strange fractal landscape :).
