Billy's Behemoth Blast (2017)

Share Collapse

1917 Nova Scotia gets blasted by accident while baby Billy is in his crib during the infamous Halifax Explosion.

Based on the TRUE story of my Grandad, William S. Owen, who was a six month old baby in Dartmouth during the Halifax Explosion on Dec, 6 1917

Commissioned by CBC and the Atlantic Filmmakers Co-op to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion-

Made mostly in Flash 8 and the rest in Adobe Animate- Newgrounds got me into animation and am forever grateful to this blessed website

This took me about seven months to animate and I loved every second on it.

EDIT: WOW cant believe how much love this thing has been getting. Thanks everyone for watching. :)))

Very mc eshery. I liked it a lot

So weird and cool

Cookerzilla responds:

Yo thanks Will ya

That sure was an extremely weird experience! The animation is great and the style is just the right kind of weird. It's actually really cool that you managed to make things as weird as you did while still managing to have the explosion feel extraordinary and strong. The sound is pretty great. The shifting perspective is positively INSANE!!! That one shot you did at 3:37 is amazing!!! There are some great transitions as well, particularly when it comes to eyes and the shear force of the explosion literally vaporizing people was portrayed really well. I don't really get what that thing that went flying through the town was though. Could you explain that? Also, I think you may have had a bit of a racist depiction of black people, but the times were different, so maybe that is what a lot of black people did in Nova Scotia, and EVERYONE was portrayed not-so-flatteringly so I guess it makes sense. Man, your grandfather seems like he was a great guy.

Cookerzilla responds:

Yo thanks for the flattering words- that's a tooth flying through halifax based on a Newfoundland tall tale about the explosion (a tooth flying into the dingle tower pictured in the movie) as for the racist stuff (in your words) I based that scene off of a picture of two men in North Preston with a Ox Cart (dated 1917). i didn't want to make up bullshit so I just showed everyone minding their own business. Thanks for watching and im glad you enjoyed it

Pretty chaotic animation. I like it.

Cookerzilla responds:

thanks g-unit i try very hard for cinematic pleasures

Largest "man made" explosion until the atomic bombs were dropped at the end of WW2.

I enjoyed it. I usually enjoy cleaner looking animation but your animation really brought to life the chaos of the event. I really enjoyed it. The simplicity of the sound effects without accompanying music also really made this an amazing film. Music would have cheapened the sound effects.

This is truly a very well done film.

Cookerzilla responds:

Yo! Yupp very interesting to see the effects of this explosion i could portray within the "real time" of the explosion- Thank you so much for your kind words :)))))))))))))))
