I think it's pretty neat so far, it was pretty fun dodging those bullets and the design is neat ^_^
What you could try to improve would be making it a bit faster paced, by like increasing the character speed, bullet travel speed etc, adding more enemies and some power ups would be cool too, more bosses as well ^_^

Generally, really sweet game so far, I just think that adding some things that I mentioned would definitely spice the game up :^)

Functional, appropriate sound effects, menu, even a little boss fight. You might want to think about how big the characters and enemies are in relation to the screen. They could maybe be a bit smaller.

Also, the blocky look of the player and enemies is fine, you might want to make sure any white edges still aren't on them.

Also, it's kinda weird how the player can seem to take a hit before they loss a heart each time. Seems odd to not just give the player six hearts instead of three. Maybe also keep the player's highscore so that players are more incentive to continue playing and beat it.
