CSSSA Animation Application

Share Collapse

Eyo, so for this summer I applied for CSSSA (California Summer School of the Arts) which is a program held at California Institute of the Arts. I applied for the animation program and well, here is one of the assignments I had to submit. Not entirely sure if I'll get in, as there are much more skilled competitors than I am, but hey I guess I can't stop my self from dreaming can't I?

Jealous of you applying to something related to CalArts. I think you should've applied the fundamentals of animation more heavily and had the bird's whole body squash and stretch as it fell out of frame instead of just its legs stretching. I could kinda see the Wile-E-Coyote thing you were going for there, but I think it would be good to show more technical skill. The body of the bird is so simple you should've done a bit more to animate it because the circle, eyes, and beak are static and dragged as far as I can tell. It doesn't seem like there was much thought put into keyframing, and you just dragged the basic body, rotated it, and flipped it horizontally. You probably could've gone for a more animated look by redrawing the bird's simple body each time rather than using shortcuts. Good luck!

Sadiolect responds:

Ah thank you for the many tips! I'll try to apply them next time if I ever do try for this summer program again. Luckily though, the people there aren't looking for top quality animators and don't expect experience at all, but nonetheless I'll try my hardest to incorporate what you've suggested // Thanks!

I really like your art style. Keep it up, and don't ever stop. You only get better by doing.
