Technology defines the world we live in today and the ways in which we live in it.

From Communications to Transport, the Homes we Live in and the Food and Water that we Eat and Drink, we are surrounded and shaped by technology, innovation and design.

We all know that technology can make our lives easier. But are we really using technology to make the world a Better Place?

Technology has always driven War and Conflict, from the earliest homemade weapons, through to the invention of aeroplanes, and complex navigation and surveillance systems. But how is it used to drive Peace?

The INCORE PeaceTechLab Project, in partnership with the Nerve Centre seeks to provide some answers to this.

PeaceTechLab is developing a sustainable Peacebuilding and Technology Laboratory which will make a lasting and positive social impact by developing free, technology enabled, tools for use in societies emerging from armed conflict.

So, what does that mean?

It means looking at how mobile Digital Fabrication, Digital Social Networks, Big Data, Digital Monitoring, Computer Gaming, Archiving, and Campaigning…
…can be used as powerful transformational tools in areas of conflict.

PeaceTechLab will formalize current learning in this field and drive innovation internationally by providing opportunities for testing novel approaches, technologies and contexts around Digital Technologies and their applications for Peacebuilding.

Led by INCORE and based in the Nerve Centre, PeaceTechLab grows out of a post-conflict context in which digital technologies have been a meaningful tool in building and sustaining peace. The project will expand this knowledge, formalize the evidence base upon which it is built, and internationalise its approach.

Working with partners including CultureShock in New York, the project will bring diverse perspectives at the leading edge of digital innovation to bear on the opportunity that technology provides for support peacebuilding in the 21st Century.

PeaceTechLab will develop into an international model of best practice in this new and exciting field, placing Northern Ireland at the forefront of emerging thought around the positive impact of Technology in the world.
