Shattered Heaven Act 4.3

First, thanks to Tom for upping my limit so I could put this on NG. Like the previous SH episodes, this is merely one scene from the full episode. It shouldn't be taken as a stand alone episode, but I do understand if you do. Halfway through this I got a new Cintiq tablet so some of the animation may look rougher because I was getting used to how it handles. Great tablet...so great.

This particular scene runs about 7 mins and 40 seconds. The full episode when it's finished will be around 22 minutes or so. I do this for fun.

Act 4 "Conflict"

After the initial attacks on the Angel facilities have died down, Gail issues an recon mission on a facility believed to be a cell belonging to Demetrius' terrorist organization. Solus, Serenity, Forza, Keira and Lenard encounter heavy resistance upon their arrival. All the while, Adam Novus has made up his mind on how he will play in the fight for the future of the world.

This scene focuses on the beginning of the confrontation between the group lead by Demetrius Libertas and the Angels forces' squad that was sent to investigate. The continuation of the battle (since it's long and takes up the remainder of the episode) will conclude in the final scene of Act 4, (4.4) Aiming for late November release.

Great

I thought it was great, sure there's some parts where it is slightly let down, but overall you're making a full episode and attempting a lot more than what a lot of other NG uploaders attempt, so you have to get immediate props for that.

I think the animation and the art style is great. Individually, it's fairly standard, but when you realise you've kept that level of quality across the entire episode which is fairly long, then it becomes quite impressive.

Some places were hard to follow, inbetween scenes would have helped. Also although what audio you had was good, the continuity across scenes, various levels, and synchronisation need work and contributed towards it being hard to follow in places.

Also, one thing that slightly dissapointed me was the rather cliche characters and story. I'd like to see it branch away from that but understand how difficult that can be, especially now you've already set it in stone with previous episodes.

If I could, I'd give you an 8.5, but seeing as I can't I have to give an 8 seeing as the things listed above means it can't quite get a 9.

AdamTilford responds:

To be honest, the animated series is merely one big experiment. This is one of those "one shot" sequels to something else with more depth. The animation is always a constant improvement in speed work. By now I've gotten the hang of animating and how many frames work in order to it to be smooth. I'm pushing to actually just finish this season. I have other works that are getting more indepth detail when it comes to animating that can't be released yet. So the amount of time I'm putting into this, while it's a lot, I know I can do much more with it. Also, this was the first time using my Cintiq, so it was a little weird for me at first, but hopefully using this scene as the test, the final one of this episode will be a lot better.

I will admit I got really lazy on the last part of this scene. A lot of the lip syncs got thrown off track with some lag and frame loss.

This is based off of my novel series, which by default is a lot more indepth, especially in character development because of the fact it's prose. And this by the very nature of it, is merely a quick throw together extension of it.

As for cliches, for anything involving any type of war or conflict, there's really very very little that wouldn't be taken as a cliche nowadays. I already have this entire season scripted. Each actual episode runs about 22 minutes, the previous one was around 30 minutes.

I appreciate the support, I know there's a lot I need to work on, but it is something I do in my free time between work, freelance work and a social life, and doing final revisions of novels.

as for effort good, other then that, u really need to get some better animation skills >.>

A good series in the making

So far from only seeing this one, episode this series has a LOT of potential. Smooth out the transitions and animation sequences, it was really hard to tell exactly what was going on and who was fighting who. Also, you may want to consider voice recording in a well insulated small room, and add some feeling to it, this is for fun, but you're also telling a story as these people, if you put emotion into your character it will show through. Can't wait to see the next one.

AdamTilford responds:

The first 4 episodes had little direction, so that's my fault. The latter ones have directions, so the voice acting will emphasize that more. It was my bad and a learning experience.

Yeah, I acknowledge the last part of this scene can get a bit confusing, I was going to add more to it, but I got really sick so I opted to pass and I'll add to it for the full episode release.

I'm doing it for fun, but it's also based off my novel series which is far more importat to me. It's a sequel to the 3rd book and I consider it akin to an anime OVA. I get better with each scene as I experiment a little more, this one also was the test to get used to animating on screen with the Cintiq, which can get a little weird if you're not familiar with it. The next one should be much better.

meh

hard to follow
lipsyncing way off
character design and animation is not the greatest
