Rolling Ball Tutorial

Author Comments

This was originally an engine I made for Jfig111's upcoming game Moovlin PC. He said it was too glitchy (not without reason) and refused to use it, so I made a tutorial out of it! Be careful when making the loops though! They're balls hard to make correctly.

Too much text

Sorry, but I got bored by the lack of practical applications for this piece - you don't show people how it's done, merely write them an essay on how to do it, which only teaches the most hardcore of nerds how to do what you did. I think that with the way that the piece is set out, it needs a revamp to get it working properly.

Start with the basics - proper buttons, as opposed to having to click on the letters, which move away when you mouse over them. As they all stand, you've got a good standing with the way that the setup of the menus etc, but getting some buttons sorted would be a great asset.

When it comes to the tutorial itself, go into depth, but remember that pictures can speak louder than words. You might have to have more frames for the piece overall, but you will get the points across with a much better rate of completion, where people actually use the tutorial and it works.

A mute button would also be nice, since the music did get a little on my nerves.

Come to think of it, adding pieces of the engine to the tutorial bit by bit may have helped. Anybody following the tutorial can do that themselves for the most part, though.

Yes, the music sucks doesn't it?

Long and boring.

While your intention was good, your methods weren't. It's an intensely long tutorial with only text and nothing more. Even a patient learner will eventually get bored because of the long text and quit. I wish that was the only problem...

It has a common problem: the overusing of filters. There are filters everywhere, you used glow on every piece of text. Filters are only good when used controllably. If I were you, I'd take the glow off the tutorial text and use it on buttons only. The button text font is good however.

The buttons are a blunder. They become active only if you place your mouse on the exact text. You need to work on the hit area of the buttons, perhaps draw a square over the text in that frame. You also cannot go back to the main menu unless you press either PREVIOUS or NEXT countless times.

It's also bland and needs more colors, mostly a better background.

The music didn't fit at all. Using a rock or metal song on a tutorial is never a good idea, you need something calming and encouraging.

While the tutorial is explaining an important asset of Flash, the mistakes above totally killed the potential.

Out of 10, I took off:
- 2 for the length and boringness
- 1 for the blandness
- 1 for filter overuse
- 2 for the buttons
- 1 for the music

That leaves you with 3/10. Meaning that it's a 1.5 out of 5, but because of the potential, I'll raise that to 2.

I hope you consider the points I'm trying to make. I'm looking forward to seeing you improved.

Kwing responds:

I didn't think it was too long or boring. I explained each line of script... Isn't that what a tutorial is supposed to do? What could have been done differently about that without costing some of the information provided?

The glow filter seemed pretty subtle to me. I mean, it's noticeable but I didn't see what was wrong with it. Maybe I used it too much but it really doesn't distract from the tutorial as a whole.

And the music is horrible, I know. I literally chose the song at random.

Good tutorial!

As with your last tutorial, this one's easily understandable. However, there are some things you should improve on.

I mentioned this in the last tutorial of yours I reviewed as well, you need to put in a mute button, and maybe a few more tracks. Right now, the music was very distracting to me.

Graphically it was okay, there weren't as many screen caps as in the last one, and screen caps are usual pretty smart to use, as it's easier to follow. Then again, this is for those that have done some flash in the past and knows their way around the software.
However, the fonts you used were horrible. One looked like Comic Sans, and the other was just a bit too flashy. The buttons were neat, but the fact that you had to hit straight on the text and that there isn't a box surrounding it made it a bit annoying. But hey, that's not too big a deal.

In conclusion, a good tutorial, seems helpful and could help me, but there were a bit too many things that just seemed to be very distracting to me.

You nailed every one. I agree completely.

Very informative

-Yes, for once someone giving a tutorial where I haven't actually used it already in one of my animations. While my animations are very simple people who make tutorials usually make it for the easiest things that you can learn in two seconds and start using right away.

-The tutorial was easily navigatable but I suggest making the buttons square and covering an area rather than having to go over the little letters to select them. Tedious but it's a lot easier to use buttons where you can click an area. The pages also get pretty word lengthy without many pictures and this can get taxing to read. I'm not sure if there is anyway to get around this but it can turn away audiences.

-Nice choice of song and something to pass along the time while going through the tutorial but having the option to mute the music if you have something else palying is also helpful. Overall nice tutorial but a few tweaks are needed.

Kwing responds:

Sorry about the buttons. I made it like that on purpose, but perhaps that was a mistake. And yes, it needs a mute button. Sorry for my blunder there.

NICE!

Very nice this helped me a lot =)
btw whats the music?

Kwing responds:

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! The music is linked to in the sidebar. Mountain King Metalized by Chrizzly.
