5 Hour Challenge #1

Author Comments

The first of a series of Gold Medal winning animations. These are done in exactly 5 hours. After that time period the computers are powered down. First a theme is given and the competitors have only this amount of time to make 3D character sheets, storyboards, and tell a good story with the animation itself. This is the Newfoundland provincial gold medal winner. Nationals are in May, in Calgary, wish us luck.

All music was recorded by us.

THEME: TRAGEDY

TEAM: James Casey & Matthew Druken from Holy Heart High

Good

Pretty good, some flaws but excellent for the time you had to do it in.

Graphically it's not that impressive, even though it did have it's moments. But what was created was good.

The sounds was interesting aswell, not that well tuned or trimed, but due to the time you mde it in I'll look over this, great job.

The story was actually pretty good, overall if there was more time or you could have taken it at your own paces it would've been near perfect, great job.

Good job, but it doesn't really entertain

I gotta say, that was pretty good going for 5 hours' work.

However, it reallhy shows. I mean the glitches in the background as the dad walks to the store, the crappy walk cycle and single-tween attack animation, the generally limited animation...

And the story itself - I assume the dad's killed by the alien, but how do the children survive? And how did the alien finally die? Why bother showing the interior of the shop?

I feel your scenes could have been better chosen to tell the story.

The sounds you picked were generally good, though some soft accoustic for the opening scene would have worked well. However, my tip would be to spend a tiny bit more time working on your storyboards before you start.

By the way, my rating doesn't take into consideration the time limit - only how much I enjoyed it. Though it may have been a somewhat impressive feat, I feel that only the final result should matter when judging things, not how much talent, time or skill went into making it.

Hmmm

It's not too bad in someways but in others it could be better, like the text, it would have been good if those where voices, ever computer voices would have been nice, just something to listen to. The art wasn't brillient but not all that bad, some parts could have done with some work, like the shop background.

Also there was one part in it where there was a car but the main charector walked home and didn't use a car, not sure if that was for background reasons or what. It could have done with a little more work overall though, but okay.

Good foundations

This is a good start to a flash project. It needs more work, but I can see where time and effort has been spent and you give me the impression that you'd be willing to put in the time and effort required to make this good.

I'd suggest that you work on the background, as when the robot walks along the first time, it's all jumpy and awful. I think it might even be moving the wrong way... it does look much better when he runs back, which is great.

Once you've got your animation issues dealt with, I'd suggest that you search the BBS on Newgrounds for Voice Actors, as there are plenty out there and they would be willing to help you for maybe a co-authorship. That would deal with the two major issues, while every time you draw, you will get better at it, although a graphics tablet may be useful.

We have a tablet now, as we are going to frame by frame in the nationals.

Hmmm

This is a very cool flash done in a very short time and for that i commend you! Theres not many flashes that could be made in 5 hours that could manage a half decent score. ^_^
I like this and the theme of tradegy is significant in it and fits very well, nice interpretation.

The graphics were alright, not fantastic but not too bad for 5 hours of work, The backrounds are pretty good too, nice amount of detail and the colouring is effective also. The animation was pretty smooth throughout the whole thing and as everyone has mentioned the first running scene was a bit glitchy but nevermind that.

The sound was cool, the music used for the scenes was dramatic and used very effectively and the ending credits music was just plain wierd. Maybe the flash could of used voice acting or speakonia voices but you probably didnt have enough time.

Overall its a cool falsh for 5 hours and i hope you win the nationals, and whatever you make for the nationals submit it to newgrounds as id love to see it. Keep up the good work!!

Graphics - 7
Animtion - 7
Sound - 6

Thanks for the review, and as I said to Haggard, send me you MSN and you can tell me, even if you are unexperienced in flash, just as a viewer what you want to see.

Thanks,
