Fan Game 0.39

Author Comments

Use the fan to blow the critters into the goal. If they're all there simultaneously, you win the level.

Let me know how you get on - tell me what level you got to, or - if you complete it - your final score.

Tips - don't hold the fan too close. Otherwise, the critters will woosh out of control.
- If you can, it's often advantageous to circle the fan around the critters to 'clump' them together.
- Tap the power - don't just hold it down, as it's very powerful.
- All enemies home into one of the critters. If you work out which enemy is homing into which critter in level 7, you can use that to your advantage to get past that level. They're fairly stupid, just moving at a critter in a straight line.

For this version:
- 7 new levels (again). including some experimentation with varying enemy speeds and moving bumpers
- New graphics for bumpers/ball/fan.
- Pause button! Also, the game is automatically paused between levels, so the time is a true reflection of your actual play time.
- replaced 'autofail' button.

The graphics were previously made for FSFS. Installing the graphics and doing everything else took 3 hours.

known bugs - sometimes ball sticks in a bumper.
- If a bumper is moving, the ball will stick in it.

Stuff to do:
- re-do coding with better organisation. (so that I can change stuff and make new levels more easily)
- sort out 'block-sticking' bug.
- experiment with enemy movement patterns (responsive and independent of player movement.
- experiment with different fan strengths and friction levels to see what works best as a default.
- Actual graphics.
- bgm and sfx

Before applying the 'wrapper' though, I still have to sort out the game mechanics.

cool

whey better than 0.3 but you should add progress saving.

LuckyLollipopLad responds:

Glad you like it, but why is it better than 0.3? Just the graphics? Or is it the levels I used?

I thought the game should take around 5-10 minutes so never imagined anyone'd want saves. Thanks for letting me know.

Stay funky!

^^Good Points^^
This game has a good concept. I like strategy type games, so this was right down my alley. This was quite unique and I could see this improving a lot.

^^Needs Improving^^
This game is more frustrating than anything. I don't like how by putting your mouse over the ball it moves all around like crazy. Touching it shouldn't do anything in my opinion. The ball would also get stuck in the little squares, which was really annoying. Also some sound effects or music would do this good.

Review Request Club.

LuckyLollipopLad responds:

Touching the ball with the fan doesn't do anything special. It's just that the power of the fan varies in inverse proportion to the distance from it, so as you get close, it'll start moving away faster as the air blowing on it is closer and has more power.

You're totally right about the getting stuck. I really should try and source some cool sfx.

Thanks for the review!

Stay funky.

Great!

I liked the concept of a fan to blow the object, it's very original and you've pulled it off very well.
I'm not very good at games like these... hence me only getting to level 2 but i still enjoyed it and think you should make more.
You should try and make the graphics a litle more realistic though.

Good Job!

LuckyLollipopLad responds:

Thanks!

For the final game I'll try and include a bunch of easier levels mebbe.

More realistic gfx? I didn't think there was a real equivalent to this. I will try and add more details. Maybe make the blocks into actual pinball-style bumpers that light up when hit.

Thanks for the review!

Good game

+ Fan effect was good
+ Interesting interaction with starry blocks, I got stuck amongst them sometimes, even pushing right through once. I found I got stuck to them on level 6, which was challenging
+Lots to do, building up with more challenges.

-Sound would be so good. Maybe music, with choices and more importantly, an off button for music. A fan sound would be so good and a nice roley plop sound when the 'critters' fall down the holes, or even a long, drawn out ahhhhhh! as if falling down a deep hole. A fanfare or something when you make it to the end of a level and a bad sound when you fail. You could have a rolling sound, like marbles or ball bearings on glass when the balls more.

I got to level five in a few minutes and found it easier than I expected, shooting through first time in a few seconds. THEN!
I stayed on level six for two hours (well about ten minutes!) trying again and again. twice I made a run for it with all four against the evil triangles, having somehow got past the holes, but no... I never made it!
I dont play games much, but Ive never seen one like this. the fan idea is great and I think I will recomend it to Codester, who likes this kind of thing.
Best Wishes,
Ice

LuckyLollipopLad responds:

Getting stuck/pushing through the blocks is actually an error in my coding. I'm not the most proficient coder yet.

You're totally right about the sfx. Fan sounds would totally rock, if it was subtle, with maybe altering volume based on speed...

I wanted to make sure the 7 levels culminated in a real challenge. Maybe I went too far. And playing through again, maybe 6/7 are in the wrong order.

The trick in level 6 is in circling the fan round the critters to 'round them up' before you make a quick run for it past the enemies.

Glad you enjoyed it. I'll make an effort to source suitable sfx and will continue trying to improve my level design.

Thanks again for the reviews!

Stay funky,

unique

very unique unlike any game i have seen before. it is very addicting also. it didnt have any sound which brought down my score but other than that it was good!

LuckyLollipopLad responds:

Well, sound wil all be sorted for v1 hopefully. Stay funed!
