Particle Effects in Flash

Author Comments

Here is a demonstration of particle effects that you can create in Flash. There aren't many, but if you are interested, I can give you the code so that you can use them in you movies/games! Just so you know, this showcase uses a whopping 88 lines of code! Weird, isn't it, for such a simple effect? Oh, and two more things:

1.This is NOT a copy of Cursors of the Future.
2.DJCityScape writes awesome music.

Please recommend for the Gadgets collection if you like it!
I am planning on making a sequel to this.

- Good

Not so good not so bad, slow on my comp

neat one

some pretty awesome graphics you got in this one. there really wasn't a whole lot to this one though unless it was a tutorial, but i was still quite impressed with the graphics in this one, they were very well done.

Like bykov already said...

Okay, bykov said basically what I wanted to say already but he didn't provide you any help, only critisism...
So, here's what I'm gonna add on.
1) Delete all the movieclips after the alpha has reached 0 or else it'll lag.
2) Learn to draw movieclips from scratch using only actionscript, check the "Cursors For The Future" that I made, all coded by AS and uses duplicating "particle system." If you don't know how, check up beginFill, endFill, lineTo, lineStyle in the ActionScript Dictionary.
3) Make it so that the AS code is dynamically inputted into each movieclip. Instead of having a movieclip already made and duplicating it or having a pre-written code and stamping it into each movieclip, make it so that each code is affected by some global variable. For example, make the rotation go up by globalSpeed and make globalSpeed go up every frame.

Last, I would like to say that the current Flash MX 2004 DOES NOT SUPPORT a "particle system." You still cannot make 10,000s of them. Perhaps you can make 100 or 1000 of them, but once you make too many, the FPS will go down. However, AS3 DOES have support for it and the amount of movieclips it can handle far surpasses AS2. It probably reaches its limits at 1,000,000 movieclips.

Catjuggler responds:

Thanks a lot for the help. I have Flash 8, and was basically experimenting with a particle effect. I don't understand though: I put a removeMovieClip function after the alpha reaches zero, and it still lags! It only helped a little bit, though.

particles = mathemathics

It was easy to make, so dont write otherwise. Instead of making those cheap effects, you should work on your code and try to create particle generator much more complex and stylish. Try to learn fractals and algorytms for the beggining. Get your hands on some serious flash tutorials and use prototypes next time. Make it object based. I wish you luck, my friend in this not easy task. Sorry for the ratings, but only a total noob would give this all 10.
Cheers.

Catjuggler responds:

All I meant was that this was hard to make for ME because I had never attempted to to something generated with actionscript. What tutorials do you recommend for learning algorithms and fractals?

Hell Yes!

yeah, cool. when you make the next one though, make it a bit less laggy, and add more for sure. great work and thanks for the props!
