**UPDATE**
The game was way too fast for most people. And by most people I mean everyone. So, I've throttled back the speeds on everything dramatically and dropped the framerate on the movie. Also, damage done by hazzards has been reduced a touch too. Game should be easier to play now. Hopefully. Thanks to everyone for the comments and advice.

*****

Part rpg, part wandering monster sim, part hack-n-slash side scroller. You're a wandering monster in the Murderous Maze. Patrol 20 dungeon levels. Slay heroes. Steal their loot. Do the jobs the Boss Monster gives you. Save up enough cash to buy a dungeon room of your own.

If you don't like reading instructions, the most important info you need to know is you move with the arrow keys and swing your axe by hitting "S". You can get a more complete rundown by visiting the library and clicking on "Monstercraft for Dummies." There are quickplay instructions on the first page.

For the record, plans for this game were far more ambitious than what you're getting here. Had to cut back just so i'd complete it in a reasonable time and because my computer was starting to crap out at the size of the flash file. (It wasn't that big, mind. My computer's that crappy.) Hope you enjoy the game. Send bug reports to me at editor@printedpoison.com

would love a sequel :)

After hours of playing..

This game is actually very addictive..I just wish their was a Save feature..And no..not just saving our level..I mean SAVING..And..God damn slow gameplay down. I mean my mind is pretty elaborate and all but the fact that I had to basically thrash my keyboard whenever I saw a hint of gray was..hectic to say the least. Please, slow that down. All in all though gameplay is rather impressive. The library was a good add for people who enjoy reading, such as me, to learn the game brilliantly. All the features were pretty good..I won't list them all..I'll let fellow gamers try it out for themselves.

Recommendation: High

Thumb Rating: d('.'d)

i agree with Ytaker 100%

as ytaker said WAY to fast. also it doesnt help that all u can do is TRY to slow down and virtually every enemy in the game kills u damn near instantly after u die the first time... ><

Annoying speedy bats...

I looked at and I thought, this is a well thought out game, with a good storyline, so why such a low mark? Then I played it. It is unbelievably fast even on the first level. You have a bit less than one second to slash them, and they often get behind you before that is over. Since the average human reaction speed is about 0.6 seconds (see the Henry-Rogers experiments on human reaction time vs stressed reactions) it is nearly impossible to hit the enemy, as they get behind you in the time it takes for the nerve signal from your brain to get to your hands.

If you hang around at the back, then the items fly forward about fifty feet and you cannot get any loot. This means you have to fly through the air to get said loot, not killing anyone in that time as you move forward. The bat then appears and hits you in much less than 0.6 seconds. This leads to people being annoyed and giving you a low mark, as the troll dies.
As the creator you may be able to do a bit better, but see if your mother (girlfriend, sister, some inexperienced person) can do it. The first one or two levels should be simple enough for a new player to do. That way you have a learning curve.

To remedy this, try three things. Firstly halve (or quarter) the speed of the screen so you can actually hit the enemies. Secondly, let the items fall on the ground so one can actually pick them up, or flying backwards if you must have floating swords. Thirdly, change the attack so it stands a more reasonable chance of hitting the enemies, a wider swing. Remember, good control of the character is essential for a fun game.

Minor points. Maybe let him kill some of the monsters for variety. They are very annoying and it would be fun to clock’em one. Add some dungeon objects like chests to smash open. Change attack to space or left click, as that it the normal button, and for those who hate instructions, simpler. Maybe have a bar with a sub quest or two in it for variety.

Anyway, I’m done. Improve this game, and when ‘Monster Sim Two: the Overworld Strikes Back’ comes out I’ll be happy to praise you. This game is very interesting, and if not for the blistering speed I’d be very happy.

Game play is too fast

I have to agree with the others, the game play is way too fast. Maybe you don't notice it because as you said in the Author Comments, your computer was crapping out on you. But on my machine, things where flying past with no opportunity to really react. All I can do is hold down the swing key and the up key to make it through the first level about 1 of every 5 tries. If I hold down the swing and back key like you suggested in another reply, I die even faster.

printedpoison responds:

Hunh... thanks for the heads up. That is good to know. Gameplay is quick on my end, but nowhere near what you're saying. I'll see if I can rejig tonight and update the swf. Very helpful comments. Cheers.
