The Tribe (BarbieG)

What can the most successful doll on the planet show us about being Jewish today? Narrated by Peter Coyote, the film mixes old school narration with a new school visual style. The Tribe weaves together archival footage, graphics, animation, Barbie dioramas, and slam poetry to take audiences on an electric ride through the complex history of both the Barbie doll and the Jewish people- from Biblical times to present day. By tracing Barbie’s history, the film sheds light on what it means to be an American Jew in the 21st Century.

A fun trailer for a powerful film!

I saw this film at sundance, and was amazed to see it on this site.
It is such a good movie! You really have to see it!

Jewish Barbie Ali G video in 30 seconds or less!

Whoa! This trailer did what trailers are supposed to do...get people interested in film. I searched around and actually watched the entire film on the sundance website and it was AWESOME!!!
It's pretty refreshing to see some professional/provocative/entertaining work.

What was that?

Honest to God, I can't figure out what I just saw. The synopsis mentioned narration, yet I heard nothing that resembled human speech. It also mentioned something about Judaism, yet I saw nothing of the sort. The title talked about a "Tribe", which implies that there would be multiple people in the film.

Instead, there was only one Barbie doll. Occasionally, I saw some jerky animation, but it was mostly just a hodgepodge of pictures of the doll, mixed in with unidentifiable sound effects.

The Sundance credential is impressive, I'll grant. They obviously saw something artistic in this little film. Me personally, I say that in this case, there are no new clothes on this emperor.
