I think it's time to stop the flame fest. Running GTA 4 is hit and miss. Crysis rigs won't run it on low, but some people with 8800s are running it fine.

Right... I just meant that the amount of memory doesn't make a good card. If you have fast GDDR5 memory @ 3.8 GHz then you don't really need over 600-700mb of VRAM. No game that I've seen requires over ~700mb of VRAM to run on full settings at 1600x1200.

I guess that if you're stocking up for the future then you might find some use for the extra memory, but at the moment you don't need 1-2gb of VRAM, it's just a waste of money, that could be spent otherwise.

1. Reinstalled Windows in hope of fixing my computer problem. Games are still fucked, although computer seems to be faster now. Oh and I memtested both RAM sticks.

2. Got my new mouse and case. It's fucking awesome!

Do you guys know if the new Phenoms are any good?

I know that AMD sucks, but I have an unused AM2+ socket mobo, and I'd rather use it for a while.

Did you format, or just reinstall? I suggest that you format with a Linux live CD and then install Windows. Also, how exactly are your games 'fucked'?

What mouse?

Get the AM3 boards, they support DDR3 memory. Otherwise, the Phenom II's will disappoint you. They fit a niche between i7 and Intel's higher dual cores. Plus, they're cheap as shit and overclockable as hell. With a good Zalman cooler you'll get maybe 4GHz+. I've seen one go to 6 on a good mobo.

I have an AMD 5400 Black Edition (unlocked mult) right now, which hit me around 70 bucks and fits between Intel's 8200 and 8400, and costs about 1/3 of the price of the 8400, and a bit more than 1/2 of the 8200, which it crushes. IMO, AMD has the best price/performance atm, which isn't to say that Intel processors aren't beasts. I was going to get an E8400, but that would have driven the price of my rig up by $160 or so, which is money I don't have. And the single ATI 512MB 4850 I have is crushing basically everything I throw at it.

But processors don't really matter too much in the gaming world. They really only matter in the video editing, audio processing, and number crunching fields. In 99% of cases, unless you're playing at 800x600 or below, the processor can basically never be the bottleneck.

3.8 ghz is the sweet spot for processors right now, after that the isn't much improvement in gaming.

I'm fully aware of that, but I recently bought a AM2+ mobo, and I still haven't even opened it up, so I'm not very keen on buying a new mobo for something that I won't even exploit to the fullest.

AIR AIR AIR

I'm taking advantage of winter's cold temperatures.

Going for 3.7GHz today, fuck. The best 6000+ overclock is 3.8GHz, I wanna try and beat that.

Can't wait for em' 32nm Duo and Hex cores from Intel that are coming at the end of this year. But I'll upgrade when they're at 22nm ;)

The thing that pisses me off is, their timeline projects 16 core processors by 2010, but games still aren't coded to take advantage of quads.

Parts from an old computer. Which is the GPU, and what's the other one?

Neither. One is a serial port PCI card, which is a rather old interface that to be quite honest I don't know much about.

The other, I can't really tell from the picture. It's either a dial-up or an ethernet card.

That's because there is more to life then just games, such as work. 3D rendering programs would surely be able to take advantage of such power, right out of the box.

Model names would help, and I'm pretty sure the one on the left in a graphics card; it has a VGA port.

Ok, now I'm really confused. I'm not sure of the model names, these parts are around 15years old.
Here's a pic with all 5 of the parts that were on my MB, and I'm wondering what they are.

What do you plan on doing with parts that are 15 years old and you don't even know what they do exactly.

Left: Audio, Middle: Video, Right: Internet. Damn sure of those picks.

No. Because I personally am more hardware based. I might know how to fix computer problems more than the average joe, but when it comes to hardware, most people are lost. And you cant tell we're computer brainiacs because we leave it at home.

Computer Enthusiast is correct term. And no because next to no one knows that I like doing this shit, and I don't look like your everyday nerd.

I'm 6'1, 175lb, no acne, have elegant clothing always worn and I'm known mainly for my running and guitar playing.

And if I ever strike a conversation with someone about tech, it's typically concerning me helping them fix their hunk of junk.

People know I'm into tech, but I don't let them know how bad it really is.

I tell people I build computers, can fix them and make them run faster, and game.

Though I would never let them know I'm actually excited about the havendale dual cores.
