That's true, it's well known that dolphins often have sex merely for pleasure. I think it has more to do with mammals than animals in general.
But coming back to the topic of human reproduction, there are several factors that play into what sex actually does for us. Sex and love are definitely two different worlds entirely, yet they can be profoundly connected. The old argument is that humans aren't naturally monogamous. Yes we are able to have sex with multiple people but we are also very hard wired to have a committed relationship with one person.
When it comes down to it, there's no umbrella philosophy for sex and love that fits every person. Some will be promiscuous and some are only interested in one person. You can't judge someone's interests based on your own experiences.
