Not sure how different it is over there, but here people feel obligated to tip the bartender at least a dollar per order. Actually, tipping over here are much less of a big deal then it is in a lot of other places. Whenever I go to a restaurant or something, though, and my waiter/waitress is particularly good, I'll feel obliged to tip them a reasonable amount. If the service is poor, I'll only tip a little bit.
With bartenders, though, it's quite rare that the customer will tip them. Occasionally someone will tell them to keep the change from whatever bank note they're handing over, but it often won't be much. I suppose that's a tip in a way, though.
Nevertheless, tipping is much better in the restaurant business than in the pub/bar/club business. I there aren't really any standard tipping guideline rates over here, which I believe there are in the US?
Still, I'll probably be getting a fair amount of free/cheap drinks, and being bar-trained is a good thing to have under your belt when you head off to university, as it means that you can be out at the bar, still meet people, and be getting paid for it. Sure, you're not drinking, but if someone offered to pay me not to drink for a few hours a week, pretty easy money. ;P
