Dad 'n Me Speed Boost 2006-03-16 10:05:53

So I finally decided to experiment with the Dad 'n Me framerate. Someone told me once that even though the browser doesn't play Dad 'n Me at the full 30fps, if I set the framerate higher, it would run faster in the browser. That just didn't make any logical sense, since the browser can't even run it at the intended 30fps.

I decided to give it a shot and exported a 45fps version. Low and behold, I think it worked! The game now seems to be running in the 30fps range in my browser.

Go play Dad 'n Me and let me know if you notice the difference!

Yeah, I think I noticed the difference, but I haven't played Dad 'n Me for quite a while, so I really wouldn't know.

Yup, seems to work much better now. :)

flash tends to do that, delta's 3d flash proved that over and over, yes.

Kinda the same here, but it's running smooth, so it can't be worse. :-)

Hehe, i think it did make a difference. On my computers it was running very well anyways, but now since everything is slightly faster, i think the game could be more amusing than before. This change could definitely benefit many of the users on NG and else where. Nice job!

Coop83 reporting the game runs smoother and slightly quicker. Good job Tom.

Hey tom, i semm to notice soething still missing, can we get a checkpoint system or something? i kinda got kille and it ruined the game knowing i had to star all over.but the best job ever making a game faster, as always you surprise me.

slight differences make a game more enjoyable. I myself prefer incredibly fast paced games, ie: Wiesi Mausland games. Fun, difficult and always full of excitement!

'tis true that the browser slows the framerate of games down by 5-10 FPS usually, in my experience. The game does seem to run a little more smoothly than it used to, but it's hard to tell how much difference there is

You might want to consider adding a FPS counter during debugging for your future games

Dynamic textfield, Var FPST

Code on main timeline:

cnt=0; prv1=0; prv2=0;
_root.onEnterFrame=function(){
FPS = Math.round(1000 / (getTimer() - prv1)*10)/10
FPST = "FPS: " + FPS + " - Average: " + av;
prv1 = getTimer();
cnt++;
if(cnt>9){
av = Math.round(10000 / (getTimer() - prv2)*10)/10
cnt=0; prv2=getTimer();
}
}

Or something like that. That should show you the current FPS and the average every 10 frames. Just change the if(cnt>9){ to a different figure if you want the averaging interval to be longer or shorter.

Example: This is supposed to be running at 30 FPS. Even with nothing else (game graphics, code, etc) running, it's significantly lower than that (in Firefox it is, anyway, averaging 24-25 FPS)

The frame rate is indeed a bit more smooth.
