I was just wondering if you could post the known rank levels.

It happened to me too. I think it was a mishap that citizens had 2% extra voting power. That's probably reserved for the next rank up.

same happened to me..... like WTF? things were almost smoother before all these chages.

I can't say I like the change to this "vote with the majority" thing. I enjoy strange stuff that most people don't even understand sometimes, and yet, if I vote away from the curve on it, I get penalized by not getting the same voting power as someone who just goes with the flow. Oh well, I guess since I'm also the minority on this board, It's not going to matter. I will give my suggestion though.
If someone decides they don't like to vote with the crowd, they should get some sort of rebel points system. Is that feasible?
Right now, this system looks like it's one choice aw2ay from an Iraqi presidential ballot.

I think it's a cool thing though

Response to Voting ranks now up! 2002-10-21 07:56:59

Why I think the new voting isn't working out.

I could be wrong but here is my observations about the new voting system. I could be wrong about this but who knows. OK. This is what I see people doing. They look at the score a movie has and figure out if they thing the movie is genna get blamed or not. If the score is low enough, they will also vote low, if the score is high enough to not get blamed, they will give it a 5 (or 2-4 but I'm sure most people will either vote 0 or 5 and ignore 1-4). So what happens is their will only be 2 kinds of movies. Those who are doing really well, and those that are blamed (their is probably a very small % of movies that are average but its not many)

If you want proof go to the portal and look, 95% of the new movies are blue or green. This sounds good but its not because they deserve it, its just that 95% of the ppl will follow the crowds's vote and not vote for them self. I don't know how to fix it, I'll leave that up to you. at the very least, raise the standards of a "green" and a "blue" movie

Ok I dont like this new voting system, before it I was like in the top 500 ng users suddenly Im like one of the worst I dont get it?

thanks,
Amin

Yeah I noticed the "Citizen"-"Civilian" thing too-I thought I just made a mistake. Anyways, I think the new system should be tweaked too...it can really bias peoples votes-especially with blams. I think the new system should also be based upon rank. For instance-a guy with a rank of 1 who helps blam a movie-wouldnt get the same benefits for that blam as a user with Rank 20. This would help filter alot of new users trying to up the ante real quick.

We have already been discussing this. Still working on it.

At 10/20/02 10:30 PM, TheNewAuk wrote: Question: Are percent ranks based on simply achiving a certain threshhold of points (like exp levels 1-9), or is it based on all NG users (like exp levels 10-30). Or is it a combonation of the two, like the entire exp level system now? Thank you.

It is based on a fixed scale. So those who put in their time helping to vote will go up in rank, but won't have to worry about lossing their rank if they take a break from NG. The first few levels require 100 points to go up, but then you need more and more points to gain levels. Towards the end you may need close to 5,000 points to go up. :)

Also we did have a couple bugs the other day. Citizens were getting a 2% bonus when they should have been getting 0%. Why should new users get a 2% bonus off the start? :) This was an accident. So the first promotion to Safety Patrol should result in a 2% bonus.

A few questions thoough: first, if you were to vote a 5 on a movie, but it didnt reach 100 votes till the next day, would you get the point or would you have to vote again? or would you get two points for two votes? Also, are you going to make a user ranks board (like there is for experience points) for blam/protection points?

Your first vote is recorded, and will stay in our system until that movie reaches 100 votes or is blammed. You can come back and vote each day to help that movie get to 100 if it needs votes though, but only your first vote is recorded to see if you get a point or not.

We will eventually probably have a vote rank list somewhere.

So we should have made it so people could get to the high ranks 1 or 2 days after releasing the new system? Ha. The highest rank I know of is Ramagi, who is an Elite Guard Private First Class. She had over 1,000 blams before we launched the new system. We don't expect anyone to reach the top rank for about a year.

Our system already keeps track of how many posts and reviews you have. People already spam the BBS and submit crap reviews just to increase their totals, so rewarding people more would just cause more spam.

We thought of a portal graveyard, where you could view blammed flash, but instead we will only allow people to read reviews of blammed submissions. This is more for the submitters benefit. If people are submitting malicious, racist, or pornographic entries and they are blammed we don't want people to continue to have access to that kind of thing.

Cool stuff. One thing though-when does a movie become protected? What score does it have to reach?
Oh and last,

Response to Voting ranks now up! 2002-10-21 09:29:42

....wich movies are "protected"?

Doesn't the new system pretty much eliminate the need for a "Turd of the week" or "Underdog of the week"?
They have always been pointless awards in my eyes and I know others agree with me. How about something like "Best new Artist" or an award for most funny or violent movies (that were still good of course)

Oh and last,

As stated before, a submission becomes protected when it reaches 100 votes and is above the 1.50 score threshold. So the 100th vote cast is the last vote you can obtain points on. From votes 101 and on the submission can not be BLAMMED, no more points are awarded, but of course the score can still be altered. So those who feel certain submissions got an inflated score, they can go back and vote however they wish to try and adjust the score to a level they think is more fair.

That's how it seems now. Especially since movies have been blammed having more votes than views. Also, run of the mill movies that in the past seemed to have around a two, now have the blue marker. I attribute this to people wanting to get protection points so they can get the next rank. Also, if the movie still has 50 votes to go, they would probably vote a "5" in order to make sure it is protected.

Don't get me wrong, the new system is much better. Movies that deserve to be noticed are finally getting views and votes.

It is impossible to make people vote fairly. People love collecting blam and protection points, and some will do what it takes to get them.

Response to Voting ranks now up! 2002-10-21 14:23:34

Woo-Hoo! I went from 'Citizen' to 'Police Officer' overnight. :)

Everyone really does need to actually watch the movies first before they vote, though, especially when it comes to Protection points. Even if you just watch a few seconds, you can pretty much tell if it is worth watching even a few seconds into it. I am seeing a lot of suck assed crap that has high votes, and will probably stay in the Portal.

Overall, though, I think this system is great. For the first time ever I am seeing more movies being deleted than those being submitted. And now it does seem a bit easier to find quality movies in the 3+ score range.
