Is it possible to get an inexpensive laptop to use to compose your music from a home pc remotely while at work?

You can make music on your phone using "FL STUDIO MOBILE".

Personally, I have used "Odesi Music Composition"

You can play melodies very easily on your keyboard and commit them to MIDI.

I think it would be best to try out all of the free alternatives first.

I personally don't enjoy making music on mobile phones, but it is a good solution for people that don't mind.

I'd say yes (and this is DAW-dependent). I'm not sure what your DAW is, but some are much more reliant on processor clock speed than others from what I've seen; FL is an example.

The one person I know who could potentially help you with your specifics is @LD-W. Let him know your DAW and what you wanna do exactly on said laptop, what your budget is, and he'd be able to narrow down what you need.

If you want to go down that route and keep it simple, the cheapest solution would be to just buy a cheap-refurbished Dell Latitude or Lenovo Thinkpad off ebay for like £100-200, then look into a remote-on package like Splashtop or Anydesk (I'd advise trialing them first before commiting to any costs). As long as you've got your ASIO Driver/Device set as the default audio output on the home workstation for when you remote onto it, then all good.

You mean like get a laptop, RDP into your PC at home and mix there? If that's the case yeah, just get teamviewer or something to let you input into the PC.

If you just mean install a DAW on a laptop and mix while at work then yeah, but depends on the laptop, and your definition of inexpensive. If were talking like $50 laptops, those are a decade plus old, and older CPUs are dog slow (first gen i5, i7, etc) from 2010 or so, and might not handle real-time processing any better than a frame a second. Also dependant on how much RAM your laptop has, 8GB is good for light mixing, but still slowdown.

If its solely for music, (not games) i would put the focus on ram and processor.

Salut!

I create 3D art here, and you can listen to my album there! Comments/Feedback appreciated.

Merci!

Try using BeepBox.

My friend worked for months on a piece on musescore only for him to lose THE ENTIRE PROJECT due to a major file corruption outside of his control. I wouldn’t recommend that one to be honest

I don’t mind it, but will always pick an iPad for FL mobile due to a bigger screen size

You need something too complex? If you're composing simple stuff (example, just lyrics and harmony), you can write it down in your cellhpone or a notebook. Knowing how to read and write sheet music can also be useful if you got concrete melodies that you wanna keep. There are online pages like flat.io or noteflight where you can write scores from your cellphone

Depends on the genre and how heavy your music is going to be, but I've been making music on my laptop for years and although it's a bit painful, with the lowest setting it does work very well. So definitely yes.

Extra info, since my FL Studio projects are very heavy with over 80 instruments, I had to use gaming laptop, but I'm sure most laptops are more than fine for usual production.
