It's more of a theory then a prophecy but I can easily see this start to rival other sites in the future. It's just a matter of when and how fast. The only thing I think slowing expansion is the lack of a good mobile solution or app for newgrounds.

I'm pretty sure about 90% of people view social media on their phone so it's possible that this site might grow the fastest if something like that were to be created.

let's just hope there's isn't shitty submissions on NG

I know you guys are going for a whole "Newgrounds first" thing, but aren't older versions of FnF already on itch.io? couldn't you just put week 7 there?

The goal will be to put up a solid fight whenever Week 8 or the next web update rolls along.

What's interesting is that FNF's popularity has continued to grow bigger and bigger, while Google has reduced our rank in their search results - from the second result all the way to page three. If Google had kept us in the second slot, traffic would have been steadily increasing all along and we'd already have been more prepared. Or if they had put us in the first slot... It would have been huge for NG.

Sorry if this is a silly question but do you know if there is anything we as users can do to impact that listing?

I did not realize it was all the way on page 3 it really seems like they have it out for Newgrounds.

I think clicking the NG link in the results helps confirm it was the link you were looking for, I think that's about all people can do on that end.

At 4/20/21 10:14 AM, TomFulp wrote: So uh… How’s everyone doing?

As many of you know, Week 7 of Friday Night Funkin’ launched exclusively on NG Sunday night and we weren’t able to handle the millions of people all trying to load it at the same time, in addition to the ddos attacks and other mischief that come with trending on Twitter and being in the spotlight in general.

Sunday was also the launch of the Friday Night Funkin’ Kickstarter! The Funkin’ crew are raising funds for a full release and it’s gonna be NUTS. These guys have been working around the clock for months to entertain everyone; it’s time to support them on the road ahead.

Unfortunately on our end, we’ve disabled FNF while we work to increase capacity and prepare for another go at Week 7. More and more of that potential traffic is bleeding off to sites that steal games from NG but we still want to build our capacity, so that NG is more capable now and in the future.

If you’ve ever considered becoming a Supporter, this would be a great time! You can pay as little as $3 per month or $25 for the year. At the least we need hundreds of additional supporters asap and it’s ideal if you can stick around as a recurring subscriber.

Picture this as a big anime battle, where Newgrounds is bloody and on its knees in the face of FNF Week 7. As Newgrounds looks up, determined, a montage with dramatic music plays, showing how much Newgrounds has accomplished over 26 years and how much was taken from it, as Newgrounds charges up to unveil a new level of power never before seen.

Well hey, if Newgrounds is popular enough thanks to a single game that it crashed, that's probably a good thing. Beats the dark period that lasted from the last time Newgrounds peaked till now, those days probably were all slow days. Not that I'd recommend trying to make the site crash more often from demand overload with hit content, but still beats not having much demand for a given day.

Now I'm no expert on servers but if you're preparing for the worst-case scenario for high demand then I say either double or triple that expectation or try to upgrade the servers to the highest possible. You may never know when underestimating the power of popularity/demand (or fans in general) would come to bite ya in the ass.

I liked how every submission was frontpaged, won daily feature and weekly 2nd place when FNF was.

Congratulations on the launch and having so much traffic, even if it is a site-crasher.

To commemorate the launch of Week 7, I put together an original prologue for it. If you enjoy traditional Tankmen videos, this one's for you.

Oh you're right! Wonder if getting rid of that was intentional.

It's not as big a problem if you view individual medal pages via the thumbnails on a profile, but when they're under a game you can't really use a browser button to move back a step in that one frame...

Saw some Homestuck reference earlier, but hadn't heard of that one... curious too.

Back in the day downtime wasn't uncommon, but not sure if it was ever due to one particular game or just overload overall.

i didn't realise fnf was so popular. i tried it out this morning and i've had the first song stuck in my head this afternoon. i kinda get it now it's like lightning in a bottle with the music and art style. it's cool

is there another example of a game where the sheer demand has caused infrastructure issues
