My art thread 2021-02-17 11:16:04

Hi, my name on here is Fossilboy. I'm relatively new to Newgrounds (been here about 2 months or so). I've been submitting some of my digital drawings on here for fun but I'm hoping to get better at creating art. I usually draw dinosaurs or whatever has caught my interest at the time. I was looking around in the forums and noticed that users create their own threads for this kind of thing, so I thought it would appropriate if I created my own. Also if you have any suggestions, tips, tricks, or critiques, I'm all for it. The only way I can get better is if I can get feedback. Thanks in advance! Here's my most recent drawing if you're interested:iu_243096_8346811.jpg

Think you could benefit to add some scales to those dragons. Their skin feels smoother than what I assume you would want.

That's actually what I was going for. The game from that they're from is really old at this point and images from its wikis are really small, so it's tough to see what material is smooth or not so I just made them more bat like. Thanks for the thought though!

These dinos look cool! it's been said before with the whole scales thing so yeah using like a scale based brush of sorts would be a good upgrade.

I know there are mistakes with this one but I need someone else to look over it see what they are. I feel like I did pretty good with it. Please let me know what I could do to make it better! I appreciate the help!

I see a lot of potential here. If you're using references for these, that's good, keep doing that. If not, get them and use them. But either way, try to pay close attention to muscle placement, overlapping forms, and proportions. Dinosaurs are less straightforward because of how, well, y'know, we ain't got em no more, but there are still speculative diagrams and 3D models of dinosaur musculature with and without the skin, and you can use anatomical charts for large birds, gators, lizards, horses, bats, etc. to supplement that. Right now you're pretty good at outlining things, but you can work on using intersecting lines within the form to depict where muscles overlap and create bumps and creases under the skin, which is super important if you want the larger ones to look intimidating.

For rendering, don't use the soft brush for now. Use a hard brush to block-out exactly where the highlight and shadows will be, and if you can do that convincingly, you can move on to smoothing the edges on curvier forms and the far edges of cast shadows. I've gathered a bunch of resources on light and shading here.

I appreciate the criticism a lot! I'll look into what you're saying and I'll practice a bit more with the anatomy studies. I just wanted to get something on paper cuz I've been running into blocks all week. This help takes the stress away.

That's fine; whenever you feel that way, reference studies are a safe way to go. They can be a little dry and boring no matter what, so it's best to do them to hold you over until those creative juices start flowing again. Even if it doesn't push you out of your funk, you'll have learned something.

Some very rough sketches I've been working on my own time while learning more practical things and doing class work. I wanna show that I'm still active even though I'm a little busy with other things.

Didn't want to be serious about the shading.

I am also an artist and I love to draw dragons and dinosaurs. I’d even give you some tips, but you already look pretty advanced. Maybe ... Should you add more lights and more shadows? Idk. I LOVE to shade my drawings, and I always try to vary the color values. Anyway, keep up the great work! I loved your drawings.

Thank you so much!

Having another art funk. I feel like I just can't anything correctly at the moment so I'm gonna binge and practice some stuff until I get my confidence back.

I have drawn a couple hybrids actually, I think one or two of them are in my art section of my profile. I just didn't add them to this thread. These were made way way earlier though so the quality is not going to be as good in my opinion.

Regardless of time they were made they still look kinda cool

Your creature design is pretty cool! Keep it up. It's got this fantasy novel vibe to it.

What's good?
