Nope no rules, you can go crazy with it as long as the ratings match up.

People seem to really treat their thumbs differently here. Some go in for a truthful preview, some really take the clickbait route, some treat the thumb itself like a real artwork in itself, cropping that work in the most visual appealing way possible! There's no rule of thumb really. ;)
The content rating toggle takes care of potential issues, though they do show on some places without the rating, like a user's scouts page. I do avoid scouting someone with all too explicit thumbs since I know they'll show there (only those shown at the time of scouting, so anything after doesn't matter), but as for viewing art otherwise: no problems.
