Generally, it is mostly an exaggeration for men to be hostile at successful women, as much they aren’t fond of upstarts pushing agendas that affects their bottom line. Third wave feminism that demeans and insults men, who ironically enough gives them far more attention they crave from men than women certainly doesn’t help.
Of course, we can’t ignore the fact that there are plenty of powerful men who are traditional to a fault when it comes to women in the workforce, and while most of their ideals are slowly dying off, most of the attitudes still linger.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

Perhaps its not the success or intelligence, but other factors? It really shouldn't bother anyone, unless they are rubbing it in peoples faces.

I feel like this shouldn't have to be said because it seems self-evident, but there are expectations (spoken and unspoken) that a man is supposed to be more ambitious and successful. Even among people that don't have a drive to one-up their peers (many do,) a lot of us also have a savior complex and like the idea that we're supporting people that can't support themselves, or feel as though they aren't fulfilling their purpose if a woman is out-earning him.

I find that people tend to hate people who are successful or smart anyway, regardless of gender. And it is because they are losers who won't bother to improve themselves but at the same time can't stand to see anyone else do better than them either.
So basically, remove the gender aspect and it still holds.
If you're not a loser, losers will hate you.
I'm only hostile to people who are successful and stupid. Regardless of gender.
As was said, mostly various ego reasons.
On the flip side, it's not like there are zero females with shoulder chips and see this behavior where it isn't.

That's probably because it's most prevalent among people without a college education, and especially those without even a high school education.
But it's not exclusive to gender. Pretty much if you have higher educational attainment than someone else, they may be hostile to you and make up BS reasons why they feel you are in the wrong for their own lack of ability.
Naturally, this makes no sense, and if they were smart enough they would see that, but then again it's not the smart ones pulling this crap.

It depends on the kind of men. I could understand why some men from a traditional religious perspective would do this, if you look at the little girl who was shot by the Taliban in Pakistan for example, because they dont want small girls to go to school, you can see the consequence of intoxicating religious teachings there. The Abrahamic religions as opposed to many other religions like pagan religions are very male-centred and have a different view on women then some traditional communities. It is however not only the religious aspect, it can also be a result of going along with the divide-and-conquer tactics to make men and women hate each other which can be seen on both the left and the right, only the smartest men and women prick through this and realize that these kind of movements are only there to divide the genders.
Normal men are generally not intimidated by successful and smart women, in fact, if you look for a partner, you want to have a smart partner. It is an evolutionary advantage. Getting children with a woman which isnt smart might give your offspring less chances to survive, so a healthy man looks for a smart woman, and a healthy woman looks for a smart man, the ones which are hostile to smart and successful women are either men which arent smart or men which fall for the divide-and-conquer of the genders, the same for the other way around, women which are hostile to men also fall for the divide-and-conquer.
