FFXV did that to a degree with a number of areas (Hammerhead being the most obvious example).
What I'd rather see is a Final Fantasy themed around Australia... Well, Australia and New Zealand both. Imagine the possibilities, eh?
I was actually just thinking about this yesterday... I'd love to see a big RPG with real life places. At least theres Fallout for a bit of that.
Although I was thinking all of North America, cause Canada needs some video gaming love too.

Don't know if they did this to an extent with FFXIII, Fang, Vanille and Gran Pulse, but I think a better effort is needed on that one.

If it helps, Sakaguchi wanted FF7 to be in New York in the year 1999... but it never got around it, even Midgar was made for that purpose of you being a detective.
