St. Patrick's Day Or Cinco De Mayo?

OK, we have two big drinking holidays named above. Sure, you can do other things on them, but admit it, most of it's about the booze. FTR, I'm celebrating St. Patrick's Day today. I have a professional job and need to be awake and coherent at 9 AM Monday. Apparently a bunch of other locals got the same idea since the parade was today. I'm also seeing lots of green and party gear outside. Though I may stop at a local place for a pint tomorrow if I get a chance.

So, which do you like better? I think I like Cinco de Mayo. Not only do I like Mexican food a lot, but tequila is my favorite type of booze. For St. Patrick's Day, I hate green beer, so that's out. As for Guinness, I can only eat food that's cooked in it. I can't drink it since I have internal issues and it's a trigger. Not going into detail there. I am quarter-Irish though, so I do get into the heritage part of it.

Well, I suppose you can cook stuff in Guinness. There's a place back home that has a St. James Guinness Stew. But you're right.

Gotta love the place though. If you call them, whoever picks up the phone recites a limerick. I guess you can tell you called the right place.

Cinco de mayo is just a excuse for mexicans to drink when they do it every day.

Being Irish, {or part Irish anyway} it almost became natural to celebrate St. Patrick's day, and basically spend the day drinking and partying down, as well as wearing green, and claim that they're Irish. As for Cinco de Mayo, it's obvious that Mexicans and those of Mexican descent celebrate on that day, but it simply isn't the same as St. Paddy's day, even with it's similarities.

Corned beef & cabbage.

Also, St. Patrick's Day is better because Irish beer > Mexican beer and Irish whiskey > tequila.

I didn't know Cinco De Mayo was a drinking holiday, I thought it was just another holiday that people associated with a certain country like the Fourth of July.

Would Chinese New Year count as one of those? I know everyone celebrates New Year's, but China is so huge that's probably a holiday in itself.

I don't think it started off that way, but at least around here it is one.

I mostly just see parades and people eating Chinese food, so not really. Unless there are booze parties I'm unaware of.

I've never understand why St. Patrick's Day is such a big holiday in the USA. I mean, there are a lot of countries that must celebrate national pride that have higher populations than Ireland, but I don't hear much about that. Is it just because we like to focus on gingers? Naw, this was popular long before that "South Park" episode. Are there perhaps more Americans of Irish heritage than any other nationality?

I love boiled cabbage. I'll even pass on the corned beef and just eat that. It's also the only time of year we can find soda bread in stores. That stuff is great with a big cup of milk.

The green rivers span the gaps of heritage. :) I'd think it's because St. Patrick's Day just seems like such a sympathetic holiday, so green, so harmonious and mythical (leprechauns and stuff). Would be nice if it jumped across the continents...
