you really should try sylenth1, its brilliant and you can manipulate the sounds in alot of ways :)
I already have it but i don't use it much (A)
VST - Instruments or effects? I use a broad range.
For instruments it's Kontakt and vsl. For synths I use Absynth or Massive. I use Evolve Mutations too because it has so really, REALLY awesome textures.
For effects I use Guitar Rig because of how powerful some of its plugins are. (Yes, I have Komplete 8).
I also use Ozone 5 for finishing off a song (mastering).
Sylenth and Massive are my favs :) I can do everything I want with those two
sytrus & albino 3 for synths
standard image-line effect plugins + rf Destroyer. <--- this thing can turn anything into artillery barrages.
I'm fucking poor, my equipment is shit and my vst's are incredibly limited.
sadness :c
NI Massive for pretty much everything. Sometimes I use reFX Vanguard for simple pluck synths. I used to use z3ta+ too but never really got around it.

Ozone
Built-in Logic effects
Somewhat regularly
Battery
Trilian
Very occasionally
FM8
Massive
Absynth
Iris
Reason
EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Platinum

When I write with my buddy I have access to Omnisphere, which I love. Too far out of my price range to pick up right now. I would love to pick up Hollywood Strings/Brass, but I'm waiting on a 64-bit version of Pro Tools. Oh, and several thousand dollars.

Well, here are some very nice free VST plugins, including a Tetris VST:

and I use Kontakt also, mostly for Pong:

I was going to reply like "TOO EXPENSIVE!!" then I made a research and found this
KOMPLETE 8 delivers a tremendous selection of top-flight instruments, effects and emulations at an equally tremendous
price: just $559 / 499 â'¬ for all 27 products - instead of $3,633 / 3,233 â'¬ if bought individually - that's a reduction of over 80%!
Yeah, Komplete 8 is a komplete no-brainer. (see what I did there? C:)
I got it a week after it was released and do not regret it one bit. The classical/symphonic instruments are its weakest area over all so if you're looking to make professional orchestral pieces, stick to EWQL, but for a beginner or for other genres like electronica, pop, rock/metal etc it's perfect.

Why not using the free Player version? I was using those for several years and made a lot of music with those freebies.

I have used the 3x Osc for everything. The simplicity may be unappealing, but with enough care and study, the 3x Osc can make anything sound so nice, as great as the famous nexus actually. I don't use vst's that cost so much money, so i like to stick with the default stuff Fl Studio already gives you. Like Sytrus, Boobass, FLkeys, Sakura, Wasp, and SynthMaker.
Ofourse thogh, the key word here is "cost". I also use Monomate. It's great for making cheap bass sounds.
Logic Amp Designer and EZDrummer (usually with Metal Machine) for composing.
YMCK Magical 8-bit for chiptune stuff.
For mixing I tend to make do just fine with Logic's own effects except for a few things.
Audio Damage's RoughRider Compressor (I love this thing, it makes compression so easy and it's free)
Camel Audio's Camel Crusher
Voxengo PHA-979 (well, I would if I could be bothered to buy it)
Voxengo Latency Delay
- reFX Nexus (mostly)
- Massive
- Sylenth1 (mostly)
- Sytrus
