the origin of 1337:

there once was a counter strike player named "Elite Hacker" who played counter strike, and he was, even though he was a tad retarded, one of the best in the land (even though he cheated... ALOT..)

in revenge, somebody came to his house and ripped off a bunch of pieces from his keyboard.

Elite Hacker didn't have enough money to buy a new keyboard (cause he was a poor college student who played counter strike all day). He decided to just use his keyboard as-is and communicate only using the 5, p, w, n, i, 1, 3, 7, x, r, 0, 4, and several non-letter keys. he changed his name to "1337 |-|4X0R". Not only was he able to play normally, but his name was hard to type, so it'd be hard to kick him.

and thats how 1337 speak and the subculture was born.

Here's how 1337 really happened.

There was an extremely talented group of hackers back in 1995 or so when the internet was new. They were able to hack an extremely large network using the 31337 or "elite" port. Since then, the term 1337 has been used in hacking circles as a way to indicate greatness or that someone had done something good. The term 1337 eventually became its own pseudo language on the internet full of people replacing letters with numbers and symbols. Unfortuneatly, 1337 grew out of hand and now almost everyone uses it. It has since lost its popularity after going mainstream.

Leet can be either be pronounced as "leet" (monosyllabic, rhymes with "eat") or by pronouncing the L separate from the rest of the word as "elle eat" (elite). The most probable explanation of its origin is from bulletin board systems in the 1980s and early 1990s where having "elite" status on a BBS allowed a user access to file areas, games, and special chat rooms, often including archives of pirated software, pornography, and text files of dubious quality documenting topics such as how to construct explosives and manufacture illegal drugs. It may also have developed to defeat text filters created by BBS sysops for message boards to discourage the discussion of forbidden topics (such as cracking).
