I haven't actually seen it once yet. But I will be next week on my lonesome and frankly I couldn't be more excited about that.

Boring. Cliche. Nothing special.

finally somebody with some sense

this isn't even close to being the best film of the year either, it's already been blown out of the water by at least 2

What are these two films you speak of? I don't think this will be the best film of the year, but I definitely think it's the best so far.

21 Jump Street and The Cabin in The Woods

coincidentally these movies both parody the extremely formulaic films that are in their genres, films like The Avengers for example

Making a parody is not a new thing. It's easy to say something exists and it's bad. For example see the last few years of family guy, or my joke back there about the last few years of family guy.
As for the formulas in The Avengers. I don't know what you wanted other than a tem of super heroes killing an afternoon doing their laundry. They're gonna fight a bad guy, they're super heroes. And of course they're going to clash. Show me one movie about an ensemble cast that all get along the whole time. There is still such a thing as doing these well, and The Avengers did all of that very well.

These films were still highly original, they aren't at all to be compared with shitty parody films like Scary Movie for example, or Family Guy, in other words they didn't rely totally on blatantly poking fun at specific movies, they were more subtle and aimed at the genres as a whole.

The Avengers wasn't terrible, but it wasn't fantastic. It was somewhere between mediocre and good. Pointing out that all other super hero movies use the same formula doesn't make it not a flaw, it's probably why most super hero movies aren't completely spectacular.. Personally i'd say The Dark Knight was an exception, and that was because it did actually try something a bit new.

I suppose it would be fair to compare Scary Movie to Jacob's Ladder then, as they both share horror genre elements, and if I don't think they should be compared then it's because I like one and not the other.

21 jump street is a parody, of 21 jump street. Before my time too, never saw it. People say it was good. But it's a comedy so it's allowed to be a comedy. I don't take that away from it.
And cabin in the woods, reality tv is bad, mmkay? Even Stone Cold Steve Austin has a movie about that.
I'm not saying that to shit on either film. My whole argument is that predictable story structure can still be done well.

The hero faces heightened stakes and goes through a loss. The internal struggle is is personified on both large and small scale. Epiphany and redemption. It's Return of the Jedi.
Now ask me if it's Return of the Jedi while holding your attention and making you care about the characters.

Cabin in the woods is more of a parody of horror films in general, the 'reality TV show' side of it was just another theme the film had going on at the same time.

I don't think that a predictable story structure automatically makes a film bad, it's just that it works against a film like The Avengers, because it doesn't really have much else going for it.

The point I'm making is that Dark Knight Returns, a movie I love for its performances, setting, nuiance and everything, can be reduced story wise to the same bones as Return of the Jedi.

I saw the movie today. It has got to be one of the best superhero movies I've seen in a long time. Plus the IMAX 3D was the icing on the cake.

Jacob's Ladder was a satirical film parodying a genre overtly?

i'm saying the films are incomparable, despite sharing vague genre similarities, for more reasons than that I like one more than the other

i'd really like somebody to point out what made this film anything more than average

The story (predictible as it may be) had a good flow. They managed to balance several strong chracters without any feeling handicapped. The effects (affects?) were top notch and not once was shakey cam resorted to for the action scenes. In the final fight the army felt real. It's easy to make cg cannon fodder but this was done well enough that you felt they were really part of that world and needing to be hit with things.
The realationships felt believable. They clashed where they should have and came together in the clutch as people with different personalities who are ultimatly on the same side would do. Then there's my favorite moment, the token kill which I totally should have seen coming was pulled off in a way that still gave the character dignity
Overall, a well done popcorn movie. That's something a lot of critics trip over. But it serves as proof of concept that with the effort and talent behind it you can make a remarkable pop corn movie that people will sit through 2 and a half hours of.
