There were only six emoticons for the entire BBS.

Those Icons were:

None/blank
Happy face
Angry face
Sign with exclamation mark
Question mark
Light bulb

If only those emotes were still used today (the first three still are) what kind of topics/replies would you use them for?

For me it's none for emotionless or undecided, happy for generally positive threads/posts, angry for generally negative or "screwed over" posts, exclamation for shock, warning, exciting or great idea posts, question mark for who/what/where/when/why or WI/HT posts, and light bulb for general ideas and/or suggestions.

Is there anything those old emotes cannot do?

The angry face used to represent both anger and sadness on the old BBS, since it's really a sad face with mean eyebrows.

But one thing the old emotes cannot do very well is love and flirting, though the exclamation mark can work for that.

Those 20 icons were the ones from 2007 to the very beginning of this year.

The original six icons have been used from like 2000 to 2007.

Also, the three obsolete icons haven't actually been eliminated...

The exclamation became the open mouth scared face, the question mark became the tiny mouth confused face, and the light bulb (ironically) became the sunglasses face.

i dunno, i like the new emoticons. but i definitely prefer them for PMs as opposed to BBS posts. i think they serve conversation purposes nicely, just because there's so much more variety.
