When attempting to post in a thread the bold, emphasis, underline and link buttons don't work. They do absolutely nothing. They do glow when I hover over them however.

I'm just a dreamer.

The new AP is a definitive improvement - finally I can credit my collaborators! It would still be nice to have playlists, though. Mini-players on user profiles would be awesome, too, but I don't want to get ahead of myself here.

I don't really see anyone saying that things like navigation and function are improved at all, they're all saying how they like the colors and the icons and the sparkly nonsense.

Anyway, I'm not really seeing anyone talking about improvements in the function or the navigation, quite the opposite.

So Tom I noticed you've been responding to things and I only quoted criticisms you hadn't responded to yet that I personally agree with:

At 14 minutes ago, ultimatum479 wrote: So, exactly when was having only pictures on each portal, instead of actual DESCRIPTIONS, a good thing? It's an improvement to have to click on every single game or video in order to know what you're getting into?

because nobody reads descriptions, and those who say they do are full of shit. there is NOBODY SITTING ON THE FRONT PAGE GOING: "Hmmm 'Tony and Jessica go for a walk in the park.' INTERESTING!" we live in an ADD driven society - 99% of the world clicks first and asks questions later. NO I DIDN'T RESEARCH but come on - the old way was nothing more than peripheral clutter. the limited descriptions for movies and games are bullshit either way - i don't see how "MR. FART GOES TO THE MALL AND FARTS" or "CAN U DEFEND PLANET EARTH FROM THE ALIEN?" has any relevance. either way, there's a change coming soonish to help make each submission more relevant, and another change if i can have my way later on. if anything, it needs TITLE, ETMA ratings and maybe the SCORE, not useless DESCRIPTION text. this is only MY opinion, of course.

At 19 hours ago, PoopyMcButt wrote: I don't care for the background art, i'd prefer something basic tbh.

this is opinion, not something that needs to be addressed

At 18 hours ago, jqzjqz wrote: I think the 'Classic Portal' deserves its own link in the navigation menu.

not happening, and thems the dice. it's still there, for those who sank into familiarity and can't figure out how to browse the site otherwise. besides, when lit comes, it'll only cramp shit further and make you hate the navigation that much more. the new way of handling shit will eventually prove it's usefulness.

it's funny how the people we kept the classic portal around for are the only ones bitching about it. it's not in the main nav, no - but it's still up there TWICE, and you can access it just as fast as you could on the previous design (half a second slower when you consider the hover) BUT IT'S STILL ONE CLICK, SO THE ARGUMENT IS POINTLESS

either way lemme ask you - as a content creator, which one of the following do you feel would bring your production more traffic, from a general, global audience?

CLASSIC PORTAL > Your Movie

or

MOVIES > Your Movie

what the hell is a classic portal? if you really get to thinking about it, the term 'portal', although coined by us, probably did more harm than good when it came to general understanding. if you're just talking about ADDING it and not replacing it, that would just further confuse people and clutter the nav - everyone's gonna wonder why there's duplicate methods to handling submissions, why some submissions are over there, while the same ones are over there, why don't we just pick one way, yadda yadda. we can't pick one way, because we want a world where movies, games, art, and audio get the individual prominence they deserve, as opposed to them all being thrown into the same dumpster.

but yeah, lets add it - that way i get to hear 'the nav was already complicated - NOW IT'S MORE COMPLICATED!' lose lose, man.

At 18 hours ago, DancingTomato wrote: This reminds me a lot of Josh Bend's old site Retrogade.

wasn't retrogade based around NG's design first? just...orange and green? COULDA SWORE! either way, i'd love to see a screenshot, cause as far as i can remember, that shit was a hot, tacky mess that looked AND worked like a pile of broken nerf guns. p.s. fuck josh bend, he drinks pee for breakfast

At 15 hours ago, Andragon wrote: Hovering over submissions in the portal used to give me a quick snapshot. Right now all it shows is the ratings.

this could be cool to re-add - that flew under the radar during development, and i dunno how. i'll mock something up to put it back. although, developing a feature for a section of the site that people will continue to use less and less seems like a waste of time...you could argue that they're using it less because of less FLASH PORTAL prominence, but i honestly think it would have phased itself out naturally, either way.

BUT IT'S NG'S LEGACY, YOU CANNNNNN'TTTTT DO ITTTTTTTTTT!!!
At 13 hours ago, richmansgirl wrote: I liked it better when all my info/stats were on my 1 userpage.

though it's not immediately clear, this was done to make each section more...sectiony. for example, if you visit someone's GAME page, personal stats have no business there. the only shit that should be there is GAME related shit. so you'll see their game trophy list, and other GAME-related-shits-n-stats, specific to that user, maybe put medals earned there, as well. (we haven't fully fleshed this one out yet.)

this is also the start of a larger plan to make the STATS page more comprehensive and important per-user. (both personally AS the user, and for visitors). that kinda data eventually won't fit into a lil' sidebar-box. i'll talk to tom about adding some quickstats to the MAIN tab - level, rank, yadda yadda, i can see that coming in handy.

At 8 hours ago, razorbladesigh wrote: the main/community page backgrounds make us look like a 13 year old hangout.

again, opinion (and 15 year old, MINIMUM)

Accurate though it may be, I prefer moving towards progress.

At 7 hours ago, shenzu wrote: I don't know why you had to separate the games from the movies. It was very obvious before which one was which by just looking to the left of the title and looking at the symbol.

i personally prefer it this way. in addition to what i said above, (prominence to each form of media), one of the biggest problems with the old way was that movies and games (rather, the producers of said movies and games) weren't really getting much of a fair shake. for one example, let's say Abobo's Butt Storm or whatever the fuck was my favorite game on NG - well nobody would really know that if movies were the spotlight of my favorites. why the hell are they clumped together? if i'm in the mood to watch a movie, why the fuck is this site filling my eyeballs with game options? it's hard to see at first, but over time i feel like the seperation will do us good, allowing for authors to shine where they're best at.

either way, a game or movie submitted to NG won't always be flash, keep that in mind. clumping them together used to work just fine, but you gotta roll with the times...there's lots of ways to make games, and a VIDEO in the FLASH portal seems a little silly - from a viewing AND submission standpoint.

p.s. MOVIES and GAMES are a little more explanitory than FLASH - i'd wager there's still a lot of people on the internet who search for MOVIES when they're looking for something to watch.

CONTINUED:

p.i.s.s. and no, the shitty dark gray icons i designed last time were easily overlooked. i rarely if ever play games on ng, so it wasted my time when i accidently pulled one up - WHICH WAS CONSTANTLY.

so yeah, games shouldn't be thrown together with movies, in my opinion. i mean why stop there, throw all the art and audio in there as well, make shit even harder to find. I'D LOVE TO GO PLAY A GAME AND ACCIDENTLY PULL UP SOMEONE'S SHITTY SONIC THE HEDGEHOG DUBSTEP REMIX.

and you know - a lot of game makers get pissy when they're beat out by a porno cartoon on the same day. and vice versa. NOW the best GAMES compete with GAMES. same for MOVIES. food for thought...

IN SUMMARY: THAT'S THE WHITE DRINKING FOUNTAIN, THAT'S THE BLACK ONE, GET USED TO IT

At 7 hours ago, HeavyTank wrote: And about the userpage, it's not very good, practically speaking.
You have all the favorites, updates etc. on the right, but absolutely nothing on the left, so why did you put the stats on a separate page? Please put them back there, or at least give us an option to do so.
Now I have to switch pages every time I want to either look at my stats or just look at my BBS posts.

yeah we touched on that, more soon

And, speaking of switching pages, a separate page for submissions that are under judgment seems superfluous as well.Again, more clicking that could be avoided.

i am a little on the fence about how we handle this, as well...although i don't understand how it's any harder to access? "more clicking that can be avoided"? it goes like this:
nav hover > judgement page
or
nav hover > classic portal (which has judgement submissions)

if anything, there's more ways to access it, and it's just as easy as the old way. the only way to make it faster to access these would be by putting under judgement movies on index.html - please elaborate on why this is difficult, i don't fully understand what you mean here

gotta add this, talking to tom now

My level avatar says "blank slate", whatever that means.

put something on your slate like everyone else did, dumdum

The submission sections with the large thumbs and teeny tiny rollover type are hard to understand and navigate.

^ yeah covered that ^

You have put a lot of work into this, for which you are to be commended, however, overall the site looks overproduced and out of control. I see that reviews are overall positive and with the necessity of use I'll settle in, but the re-do is a step back for usability.

i feel this is premature - although you may feel that way, think of someone who's not familiar with the site. or take me, for example - i've been here for 10+ years and every time i went to add a submission to my favorites, i had to look all over the damn page because it was always in a different place, or i forgot where it was. i've actually gone to add a few things to my favorites a few times, and just said FUCK IT and left - it was fucking infuriating. NOW, it's always in the same spot, regardless of the media type. little changes like this may annoy the person who's been using NG for a while, but help make the site more accessible for those who don't. am not done with this topic...will summarize at the end.

So for starts, the top navigation bar. It's called mystery meat navigation, and it's a bad idea. Yes I know Google did it, but one of the things we all liked about Google was the simple hyperlink-based navigation. Google fucked up doing this, I'd urge you not to make the same mistake.

i don't understand the correlation between our nav and google's, and i completely disagree with this here. granted, i designed it, so it sounds naturally biased, but (and believe me, i'm not trying to belittle you here) why is it hard to understand GAMES, MOVIES, AUDIO, ART, etc? click GAMES and you get everything GAMES - hover games and you get Latest, Greatest, Popular, GAMES. what's the problem you're having with the nav, exactly (BELITTLING YOU HERE >) THAT NOBODY ELSE SEEMS TO HAVE - honestly, elaborate

Form follows function is the way it should work, and decreasing the functionality to make it a teeny thing up at the top doesn't seem to be an improvement to me.

what teeny thing? are we talking about the same nav orrr...the small nav by your username when you're logged in?

(BOTH OF WHICH WORK FINE LOL)
And I notice that, despite all these unnecessary and unwanted changes that aren't particularly helpful, that other things that seem obvious that people have been wanting for years simply weren't added. For instance, a preview button, or the ability to choose where in your post an image is inserted.

understand that this release serves as more of a launching platform for future changes. that's the way i see it at least, and shit is a lot easier to manage now (for us, from a technical standpoint) (this is where you insert joke about being a lot harder for everyone else). yes, a lot of the development time went into rebuilding shit we already had. and have been using. since like, 1999. our core was pretty much re-worked from the ground up - now, that end of the development process obviously (and unfortunately) can't be reflected - but probably made up at least 75% of the time it took to complete. at no point did 'fuck the users, we're not adding anything they want' come up in conversation. i know you didn't say that, but a lot of people seem to feel like we gave them a big finger on shit they requested. i don't recall anyone renting a santa suit and aggreeing to address the wishlists of a million users. for the most part, they're all OUR wishes, too...but the foundation has to be solid before you build a house.

I'm up for change, and I appreciate that this site is your baby, but it seems like things were changed in a way that overcomplicated things without adding to functionality, added visual clutter, and got rid of stuff that looked and worked really well in favor of things that flat-out don't.

would like some 'really good vs flat-out' examples that aren't based around one person's opinion, comfortability with archaic methods, or someone who simply grew accustomed to an old way of doing something and refuses to accept the new way of doing it. nothing here is drastic. i especially love to read complaints from someone who preferred doing things the old way - when the old way was broken and unintuitive to begin with. change just annoys people.

with the additions we DID add vs. what was changed or moved around, i actually feel the useability is balanced with the old site - it's just as shitty and hard to use as it ever was, RIMSHOT. actually this one edges the old one out JUST a little bit (in a positive sense). man, regular or not...you cannot deny that the old site was a patchwork of broken features and crappy bullshit with duct tape slapped all over it. YOU CANNOT.

BUT in summary - a lot of people are panicking like this is the end-all, when it's really a humble begin-all. it's by no means perfect OR finished...nobody said it was, and i agree completely that:
- there's a lot of shit that needs to be added or adjusted. i got a wishlist of changes about 50 deep so far.

- some people don't like the color pink. LOOKING AT THE COLOR PINK DOESN'T MAKE YOU GAY, TRUST ME, YOUR MOUTH WON'T WATER AT THE SIGHT OF DICKS AFTER BROWSING THE ART SECTION
- overall function leave much to be desired
- a-cup titties are just fine, they're still tits

stick around, shit will start naturally evolve into something we can all agree on. that, or you'll eventually just get used to it (like you did with the old site). and hey, at the end of the day, it's still NG. kinda.

How do you turn off the under review notice that appears before flashes that are still under judgement? Makes an absurdly annoying sound until you click the "understood" button, which is further compounded if you happen to be like me and prefer opening multiple under review flashes at once and watch them in order.

It says right underneath that it can be turned off in our configuration page (an admission that whoever tested it must've realized that it was a stupid idea to have in the first place, so why even have it?), but nothing I change stops it from appearing.

I MISS OLD NG! I agree with the post above on the level icons. Now there all small and lame. I think flash descriptions would be good too because getting a LITTLE bit of info of what something is gonna be about is useful. One thing I HATE about the new redesign. THE LOGO IS GONE. I mean, yeah, the name and tank are there but the classic old yellow lights and black building are gone... I mean Really? That was like the basis for Newgrounds, it was the color and was in all the backs of the now-gone level icons.

There needs to be a "Classic" option on the main page for people that liked the older version better.

New design is alright looking but I loved the older look and i always will...

Whoever complains about movies and games being separated should remember when the TIME magazine listed NG as one of the top 50 websites and focused solely on games. It was a bit disappointing, wasn't it? (even though it was great that the site was on that list in the first place, of course)

I was a little sceptic at first. Usually it takes a lot of getting used to when your favourite sites get a new design, but its been completely painless to navigate, very user friendly. Which means newcomers will feel the same way.

Very good job!

I'm sure someone has mentioned these things, but here's my two cents.

Does everything need a glossy filter on it? It looks like a bag of hard candy and glass. There's also a lot of textures and photoshop layers on everything. Maybe tone it down a bit. This site has a lot of navigation and a lot of content and pages to go through, so visually, it's kinda busy.

I like the color changing depending on the page. I like the background art. I think the level icons are awesome and different and just take some getting used to. I like how the icons are organized on the front page.

In fact, if you are considering any visual changes at this point, a good example would be all the icons up top by the username. I love the simple patterns and mouse over highlights, good design, and the iconic color scheme. Also things like the arrow buttons on the featured content.

Of course, this all may just be shock of the new and I'm just talking out my ass. It was a big step and I'm just critiquing it because it was a bold move and I feel like you guys are looking for some feed back. I miss the portal chicken banner.

Cheers :)

I absolutely love this redesign. It looks so much better, and I am already flipping out on the improved functionality (despite the hiccups when it launched).

The only thing I was really hoping for was that the audio portal be split between "Voice Acting" and "Music" in the same way the Flash portal was split between "Movies" and "Games"

Is there any way at all to make this happen? Not having it wouldn't be the end of the world, but holy shit it'd be nice.

Firs I'd like to give you the congratulations for the redesign, I've been a member since 2007 and the site looks amazing. not that I didn't like the previous looks but the new looks and functions are really something special.

But there is an important feature missing, on the previous version whenever we hovered the mouse arrow over a submission in the portal page we'd get a small box with basic information like file size, age rating, submission icon and author's name, now we just get the age ratting instead.

This was extremely useful for not only knowing beforehand how big the files are but also to know who is the author behind it, for example we could see if certain submissions are from well known artists like Egoraptor or from spammers like the remnants from Kitty Krew & other crews, this saves a lot of time for users because we know which submissions we should avoid and which are a safe bet for entertainment before we have to load the page in a new tab or window, of course this is mostly used by users that are already used to the portal.

Also I'd like that the basic community stats would also return to their traditional form or having that options to be enabled beneath the user picture and info as it is easier for us to track our own progress by just checking the basic information in our user page instead of having to jump to the dedicated stats just to see for example who many saves or blams you got today or how many exp points and the user rank and level icons.

Of course this is mostly for users who care about having those visible (like my case).

Thanks for your time.
