There seem to be references to him in all of my University readings right now. It's really giving me the shits.

Anyone read any of his books? Is my hate justified, are they really boring overall analytical pieces of anal retentive speculation? Or are they enjoyable on a pure pulp level too, and I should check em out one time?

ok. William Gibson wrote Neuromancer, which is an important work of fiction in the whole cyberculture scheme of things. Currently, I am studying a subject called 'Exploring Technoculture.' I was thinking about trying to borrow the book from the library, but only if it's worth reading from a pure enjoyment point of view. If it's boring and too weighty, I may as well just try and get a feel for the subject from the copius amount of academic notes I already posess...

Gibson wrote Neuromancer , considered by some to be the first cyberpunk novel. The other titles in the trilogy are Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive . There is also a collection of short stories entitled Burning Chrome . One of the stories was made into a movie with Keaunu Reeves called Johnny Mnemonic ( a true piece of crap, probably the reason he was chosen to star in The Matrix ). Gibson recently finished a second trilogy, one of which was entitled Idoru . The first trilogy and the short stories are definitely worth a read. He also wrote a few non-fiction books about the net and several screenplays.

I read Neuromancer all the way through, and I'm the type of person to get bored by books easily. So, I suppose it's not too boring.

From what I understand William Gibson is the guy who started the whole Cyberpunk sub-genre.

My animation, 0_Count, is cyberpunk, so it probably owes some respect to his work in one way or another. Check it out, there's a link in my sig, or check my profile.
