Id rate this a 4.5 because I think 1:12 sounded weird by one of the notes and also the mix should have been more like 2:36 where it was so alive and sounded like a professional jazz song in ff13. 👀 I think you were just rying to add more variety but it wasnt necessarily achieved as it was just a more alive version of whats already been played

I think what you could have done was use 2:36, then quiet it down with a piano and bass. Then find a way to transition back to what 2:36 but with a bright brass ensemble to help conclude the music with the added layer. That way the listener had a break with the full mix, and then adding that little bit to the mix would have touched them in a way to view it as a "epic" song.

This is an official NGADM '19 Review

Composition:
This does a really good job bringing on the right funk vibes. Everything just jives really well, and I really appreciate how you utilized the organ too. I like that you went for a big band approach, and I think it worked towards what you wanted to do. It wasn't necessarily apparent that the big band feel was there, but I like what you did

Production and Sound Design:
The mix didn't feel too solid. There were some aspects that you got right, like how you added in the organ, and I like whatever the lead is, but it's overall a bit too quiet. Also, like what SplatterDash mentioned, the Brass sounds like it's in a different space than what the rest of the instruments are in.

Structure:
Like I mentioned earlier in the composition, it was a little unclear the direction you were kinda going, but what felt the weakest is that it was a similar energy dynamic throughout the whole song. However, it didn't keep me from enjoying the song a bit so it wasn't too bad.

Emotion / Conclusion:
I have a heart for funk style and jazz in general and I think you pulled it off pretty well. It felt as if there was some left to be desired, but I enjoyed it a bit

Composition: 9

Production: 8

Sound Design: 9

Structure: 8

Emotion: 8

Again big thanks for these reviews!! I definitely felt like the mixing for this track wasn't what I wanted it to be at all. This track was honestly a great lesson in time management, I focused too much of my time on a few aspects of the song that ultimately didn't pay off and sacrificed time to create a good mix in the process. Happy to hear you still enjoyed it, definitely will touch this up in the future!

This is an official Semi-Final review for the NGADM.

I like the feel of this! The best way to describe it is kinda like jazz mixed with some modern music. It's so chilled out and relaxed, and I'm not afraid to admit that I listened a time or two over.

My general nitpick is that I feel that the brass at 1:07 doesn't really fit in with what's going on. I don't really know how to describe it other than it just feels... a little set back from the other instruments. Basically, feel free to bring out the brass instruments in the mix. (EDIT: during that section. I forgot to mention that 1:07 was the only part that didn't fit in; at 3:15 it fit well, so just bring it out only at the 1:07 section. Sorry about that confusion lol)

Otherwise, I like this a lot! It's funky and cool, and I think it's good enough to bring some competition on. Good luck in the final round of NGADM!

vocaloutburst responds:

Thanks a bunch for the review!! Yeah, the mix was definitely barely touched on, my fault for not managing my time well, but I'm really glad you liked the vibe of it! I'll have to fix it up and reupload it sometime in the future for sure

I like the jazzy flair and crisp percussion. The texture is a bit minimal and staccato-y, but I like the addition of the groovy plucked bass at :20-ish. The solo at :35 is really wonky, with a lot of dissonant notes and large interval jumps that make it a bit hard to follow the harmonic framework. The mix is a little quiet, and could even use a higher saturation of effects to keep things interesting towards the beginning. The organ solo at 1:40 was super nice, and the texture fills out better in the second half of the piece. I really like the bright brass chords at around 2:25, too. The structure is a bit meandering and disjointed at times, but the piece comes together well by the end. Despite my general sour attitude towards sudden endings, this one seemed fitting given the rather quirky tone of the piece overall. You’ve also managed to give the piece a similarly quirky title. I applaud you for continuing to take so many compositional risks with your work, even at this late stage of the competition. Despite some minor gripes with the arrangement and harmonic details, you won me over with this one. Keep at it, Vocaloutburst! ^^

vocaloutburst responds:

As always, thanks a ton for your reviews man!!! Tbh, I was REALLY worried about this one cause this is pure jazz XD. In this round, I felt like I was hitting a really bad block, so I went with creating a track that I was most comfortable with and that's honestly jazz stuff. I was afraid that it wouldn't sound very fitting in the contest, considering that most of the submissions so far were orchestral or cinematic. So it really means a lot to hear that you still enjoyed the piece regardless of the style!

great stuff! very groovy. think everything could generally be a bit louder, because it was a little hard to hear, but otherwise good work!

vocaloutburst responds:

Thanks so much dude, glad you enjoyed it!!! Also, YOUR TRACK WAS INCREDIBLE!!!
