(feat. Mara and Jack) | (audio file updated oct 7)

1. this was a super fun project! the idea behind this is that it'd be like the opening number of some musical (that doesn't exist (but maybe someday it will exist idk?? what do you think))
2. unfortunately, newgrounds doesn't have a broadway genre so into pop this goes :((
3. since i've been writing songs with positive messages in the previous rounds, i wanted to write a really happy-sounding song about a bunch of super sad people and i thought that would be funny
4. check out those REAL INSTRUMENTS WOHOHO finally got me some nice recording stuff (why is mixing real sounds so hard aaaa)
5. big thanks to my friends mara and jack for helping out with the vocals!
6. this song was inspired by some of the work of Pasek and Paul—if you liked this and you haven't listened to the soundtracks for the musicals Dogfight or Dear Evan Hansen, check 'em out! they big good
7. good luck to vocaloutburst!! y'all should check them out too; they got some great stuff as well

they like to say that life is an adventure
look on the bright side, grass is greener, all that crap
but all those nothings should be stamped ‘return to sender’
some of us are thriving, but some can’t afford a mishap
they say my problems don’t exist
i’m too much of a pessimist
but i don’t know how i’m supposed to cope

i broke up with my old lover
i got bills that i gotta cover
my wallet is thin and my hope is gone
but all that said, my life goes on and on

(enter martha)

you’re not the only one who isn’t good this morning
these past few days have been a battle for divorce
you live contentedly so long, then without warning
everything changes and you’re left without recourse
my income pool is dryin’
my lawyer stopped replyin’
don’t know how i’m supposed to cope

M: i got fired on the same day
that i found out my husband is gay
and good for him but now he’s withdrawn
i guess my life will still go on and on

D: i ran into three policemen
who tried to frame me for speeding again
my doppelganger is an ex-con
but all that said, my life goes on and on

(enter chester)

i hate my life, it makes me wanna cry
i don’t think anybody would care if i died
i’m in debt, i’m a loner
and i can’t get a boner
and i couldn’t get sober even if i tried
(and then again but this time everyone sings together like it's non-stop from hamilton)

D: i’ll book me a therapy session
M: and i’ll win back all of my possessions
C: i’m avoiding being preyed upon
D: and all that said, this life goes on

i don’t want to live in this hell
but at least you two are stuck here as well
this moment in time that’s been goin’ wrong
it might suck now but life goes on and on

Ha I can definitely relate on multiple levels. I really enjoyed this track. 😆👊🏼

it's cool ig

This is really cool! I love the instruments behind the lyrics (which are funny and sad at the same time), they sound really nice. I could really see this being at the beginning of a musical. Maybe you should write one lol.

Goddamit whenever I listen to anything lyric related you've ever touched, be it The Chipsical! (Love it)(haha miyo haha garla), be it Rhode Island, it's just a blast, without fail. Your style of writing lyrics and stories is so charismatic and the humor is ALWAYS top notch! In this one, the juxtaposition between the narrative and the mood of the melody is admirable.

I never really like the reverb you use on vocals, it feels too long, at least when paired with the the rest of the layers of the song, but it actually came together in the end when all three bois sang in unison. Somehow...? I dunno exactly why, but having all three I guess makes it so more of the song feels in that space, and thus each individual tail of reverb makes more sense to my ears, if that makes sense?

Anyways, the composition and lyric writing is, as I said, hecking good. I specially like Chester's breakdown. The chords leading up, so damn dissonant, in a fitting way. Big claps for that.

Also, good singing, as usual.

Overall, keep habing fun with this, it shows in the final product :chaps: :chaps:

I like the bouncy vibe at the beginning, and I applaud your use of real instruments to aid the down-to-earth cabaret feel of the piece. I’m consistently jealous of your ability to mix vocals this well, and the comedic elements of the lyrics make the appeal of the vocals that much greater. There’s something vaguely cheesy and/or cliche about the arrangement of the piece in some regards, and I think there’s room for a little more variety in the content of the instrumental tracks. I think this piece is short enough that it could use a solo or harmonic shift in the middle just to spice things up; the structure of the vocal phrases gets pretty repetitive after a while, and part of me feels like it’s a bit too narrative-driven for its own good. That said, you clearly put a lot of creative energy into the lyrics and thematic content, and it pays off. This piece sounds like a conglomerate of a richly detail-oriented creative process, and it was refreshing to hear several vocalists in a piece in the NGADM. Keep up the good work, LE! ^^
