So?ing Machine - "Bubble Blinders"

For the first official SunVox competition in over three years. Project file had to be compressible to under 64 KB. Top 3 entries will be distributed with future updates. The program is free for desktops (cheap for mobile). Project files for this and all other entries are available here: http://www.warmplace.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?p=16956#p16956

I spent about half of the time between the announcement and the deadline either working on this remix: https://soundcloud.com/so-ing-machine/transient-the-humans-are or experimenting with strange, gimmicky module setups that I had trouble bending into decent music. I wanted to submit something technically clever that would serve as an inspiring demo track. Then, after doodling the bulk of this melody, I decided to just pursue it for the comp, and hope for interesting techniques to arise naturally within it. Some kinda did!

Given that and that this is for a competition at all, I've been a bit worried that this or any other oddball entries might not appeal widely enough to earn demo status. Fingers crossed for the weirdos we'd inspire!

With zero formal background in music theory, figuring out 2:03 was admittedly a bit tricky, juggling the keys and trying to convey how the movements of the freeform melody made sense to me. (It even took me a couple minutes to remember when I came back to the project after initially roughing that out…) Hopefully the note velocities are enough to clue in listeners.

Kinda rushed the climax? Maybe? I wanted a smooth onset, but it might come off as more of a weakened spike in energy. It felt short when I was finishing up, too, but now it seems like it's just barely the right length. But what do I know, I'm just the artist. :V This may all sit perfectly with another pair of ears, or come off as pure noise to you misophonia sufferers out here browsin' music pages.

I imagined that mess of waveforms drifting around through the second minute as a chunk of an alternate reality passing by. The middle is when half of your head gets caught in it.

This has a very unique vibe. I actually really like it ! Made me think of Pikmin games' ambiances at times, but with a more electronic feel.

There's a lot of techniques used in this track that I don't know about so giving feedback will be tricky. To me, there is just this rise at about 1:35 where it feels you shifted keys and it makes the rise a little less powerful than I believe it could have been if you had stayed in the mood of the chords you introduced in the first half of the track.

Other than that it's like WaterLemonMusic said, outstandingly weird, well done !

Saltbearer responds:

Thank you for tasting my ear meal!

I feel the shift in the rise serves its purpose, honestly. […] *crumples screen and tosses it across the room* I've just been stuck trying to explain exactly how for longer than I'd like to admit… the abstract nature of an instrumental means you can project all kinds of emotional arcs onto it. But whatever it is you feel up until 1:17, you get a brief moment to come to terms with that before it's lifted away, and you welcome the opportunity to be set gently into the oncoming noise; to be cleansed by it. … Or do you, in a sudden, blissful delirium under its influence, trip into it and become broken by it? … whatever, I've overthought it enough.

"There's a lot of techniques used in this track that I don't know about…" — Well, the project file's free to analyze if you feel like it! Following SunVox's UI can be unintuitive for some, but I think I did a decent enough job of making it presentable.

See you again soon, hopefully!

Outstandingly weird. You're an alien
The ambience of the song is like I've landed in the Far East, but on another planet.

There is the classical stereo "squash" issue tho. Also maybe it lacks basses, something like sub idk

Gr8 overall, i'm faving this

Wow, simply incredible. You did a really good job with this. <3

I'd love to hear more from you. ^~^
